well, if you want a DECENT job, yeah you need college8-Bitterness

You are completely missing my point. I was never talking about jobs or anything, I'm talking about education. You're not going to land a decent job with a markting, psycology, or women's studies degree.

You don't need college to educate yourself, all you need is an internet connection or a library card.

Palantas

Lifelong learning is great (no sarcasm), but there's a big difference between someone with a bachelor's in Wikipedia and a real degree. That difference is testing. When you go to school, you are tested on what you know. You receive grades, and eventually a degree, which proves you mastered the material.

No sane person would hire someone for any sort of professional position without some proof that said person actually knows what they're doing. What, you're just supposed to take someone's word for it that they've been real busy at the library and on the Internet? You want that person building your car? Representing you in court? Performing surgery on you?

Here, I'll take an example from my own field: Defense. Who would you rather have defending your country?

  • Someone who's actually been to a Basic training and military specialty schools, and is qualified on the latest weapons and equipment.
  • Someone who promises they've been real busy at the gym, go huntin' regular, read up on Army radios online, and play Counterstrike.

Yeah, I want someone who can prove they're educated, by having authorities in the field test and certify them.

Experience >>>>> Schooling. The person with more experience in the field always gets hired first.

The hiring process goes like this: Experience in field>Personality/interviewing skills>Schooling

Well considering most well paying jobs require one.......................

Require what, and education? No they don't, they require a piece of paper saying you did this and that BS to make you seem more valuable than the next guy. They don't care if you're actually smarter, or how much you actually learned.

up here in canada you can't be a welder without one.

Reading comprehension? Technical education is different, if you are being trained to do something in which you will be able to find a job and actually contribute to the economy then your training is valuable. I was referring to general education and the mindset that the only way you can learn stuff is through college.

Also in the way of degrees that will actually land you a job, I think it's stupid that you have to take so many electives. If you're majoring in something technical you shouldn't be forced to take english/history/whatever else BS classes. I think the entire education system needs to be drastically reformed.

It's like people are brainwashed into thinking that in order to have a true education they have to go through college. There's the whole mindset where people think that everyone deserves the right to an education therefore the government should pay for their schooling, even if it is for useless classes/majors. You don't need college to educate yourself, all you need is an internet connection or a library card.

Watch documentaries, watch the history channel, read articles/books about subjects that interest you and you will get a better education than listening to lectures, writing notes, and cramming for tests will give you. People can just buy the books for the classes and read them without actually going to the classes. Now if we're talking about things such as engineering or medicine, that's a little different. People should go to college to get a piece of paper to make themselves appear more valuable to a company, or to get a job, not to get an "education."

When you think about it, people who smoke weed a lot probably have their lives go by a lot faster, and remember a lot less of their life than people who don't do drugs. They will forget a lot of stuff during the time they're smoking, and time will fly. It's kind of like all the time just dissapears, when added all up it can account for a large portion of their life that they weren't present for mentally. But as long as they are happy, what the hell. But then again, maybe people in comas are happy too.

after a few years you forget too much about them? I can't remember a lot of details, only the general plot and some of the story. I feel like I have to re-read everything. With movies it takes a lot less time to re-watch watch them, and you remember more details about the scenes.

for the sake of the business? Sure it's easier than entering your cc number and stuff, but paypal fees are bad for businesses.
