If you are a fan of a deep, lengthy, custom RPG experience with some revolutionary features, I highly recommend Dragons Dogma. It is easily in the top 5 RPGs of this generation IMO. Likely in the top 10 of all time too.
I can't, however, offer a comparison to KoA because I haven't played it.
Grandia is another oldie that lacks random encounters. I am currently playing it for the first time and the lack of random encounters was a pleasant surprise.
Increase in customization, more character customization, and less linearity. DQ VI was one of the first few RPGs that had such customization and openness back when it was released. It way WAYYY ahead of its time.
