Well for 1200$ (similar budget to mine) honestly you would be better off going AMD for the gpu. (The performance you get for the price is ridiculous).

I went for a ATI R9 290 (I am just going to put an aftermarket heatsink on it later). You missed out on a lot of deals this past weekend sadly (I got a i5 4670k MSI gd65 for 50$ off plus a free 4gb stick of ram (40$ ripjaws X) plus another 4gb stick all for 460$ shipped).

The build MonsierX linked is a solid build for the money. One suggestion would be if you really want an SSD go for a 120Gb which will cut out enough money to splurge on an R9 290 which has many advantages over the 280x. Also many of the reference ones out right now come with battlefield 4 which for me would have been a purchase regardless.

You could just get a reference card as well, just understand they run very hot, or loud (genius fan design by AMD).

Like I said, if there's a clear advantage to going the AMD route, I'll do it. I'm also not all hyped up on the SSD thing like most people are, as long as there's room to upgrade to one if it ever becomes a necessity to me. I'm definitely going to be keeping my eyes peeled this week for the Cyber week sales, though. Also, as I mentioned before, I don't know a whole lot about part compatibility and that is a main concern of mine before I go and splurge on a few expensive parts.

What's up gang,

It's been a while since I've logged onto here, but I plan on being a little more active in the coming months because of recent changes in my schooling and work. Because of those changes, I have more time to fit gaming back into my life. The first thing I wanted to do was to build a new gaming PC. I'm looking to spend about $1200 not including a monitor. I've been out of the loop with PC components for quite some time so I'm looking to you guys to help me pick some good parts and hopefully help me understand what parts will be compatible with each other.

Also, just for reference I do prefer nVidia and Intel parts unless there is a clear advantage of going the AMD and Radeon route.

Thanks,

Adam

There are little tricks to level up everything while playing. For example, if you play as the class that has the resupply boxes, and set down one of those resupplies before jumping into a jet/helicopter/tank, then all of that experience from resupplies will go towards your vehicles.

There are a bunch of little tips and tricks like this all over the web. Just google them and you'll get a ton of stuff.

My best suggestion though is just to take it slow and don't get frustrated. It's going to take you a while to learn all of the maps, learn the best guns, learn your favorite spots to cap objectives, etc. For every flag on every conquest map, there is one spot that I will go to in order to capture/protect every point. You haven't found those yet. Just take your time, don't get frustrated, and deal with the curve. If you're not doing well getting kills, get your exp. by supporting your team, capping objectives, and ultimately winning the game.

Thanks, I was actually trying to do that tonight. I played as the assault/medic class and got a lot of points. Also a fair amount of kills with the M416. But that was at Operation Metro. Not too easy to get lots of kills on the bigger maps like Operation Firestorm and Kharg Island.

I bought Battlefield 3 a week or so ago expecting a game that brought elements from the previous BF2, and the Bad Company games. I picked it up and jumped right in to the multiplayer. Conquest is what I remember loving about BF2 because I've always been a fan of CTF style games, but I was surprised that after playing for an entire day, I struggle to get kills. Let me rephrase that, I struggle to get even one kill for every 5 or 6 deaths. This is the first FPS I've played on a console for a year or so but I didn't think the transition would be this rough.

Now it's been a week and things are barely better. I've noticed that the Engineer class is by and far the most used class for whatever reason, probably because it's imbalanced. It's pretty evident after playing recon that the later guns are more effective than pretty much everything early on, and to top it off, people that play recon usually end up with far less points and kills than the people with the stupidly overpowered automatic weapons. I go around corners and I die before I can even start shooting. It's the most dissatisfying feeling you can get after buying a game.

I try to use vehicles but I can't get kills because I have nothing unlocked. Someone tell me who the jackass is that decided to not give you essential weapons for jets and helicopters right off the bat? Is it even possible to kill someone with a jet when literally EVERYONE else has heat seekers?

I wish this thread wouldn't come across as an angry rant, but that's pretty much what it is. I'm awful at this game and would like to get better, but I can't really get into TDM because I bought this game to get away from what COD has done to the FPS industry.

If anyone has had a similar experience with BF3 and has any tips to improve

The difference in quality can probably be attributed to two things.

- On the PC games are actually RENDERED at 1080p if you make them render at thaty resolution. When your TV downscales the image from 1080p to 720p you are improving the image quality. Depending ont he algorthm used by your TV, things like jaggies and texture defects will be less noticeable. This is the same effect as consolites in system wars get when they downscale a 720p shot of a console game into a tiny picture that fits ina forum board. Obviously things that stick out when you actually play the game - jaggies, low rez textures, etc - will dissapear, making the game look better than how it actually looks.

- The TV is also probably "smart" scalign the image, not to 720p, but to it's actual native resolution (propbably 1366x768), which will give you a crisper image than going from 720p to 1366x768.

The reason for input lag however, is likely due to image processing on the TV. Make sure you have things like motion improvement/fram rate convertsion, color or image improvement filters, or forced de-interlacing off on your TV. The less processing on the image the less lag.

some TV's suck for gmaing though, because they include some image processing no matter what. It's why I prefer gmaing on a monitor over TV's.

Thanks, thats the answer I was looking for. I appreciate the help everyone. Guess on PC I'll play it 1360x768 and I'll just fiddle around with the Xbox to see what works. Might be time to invest in a nice monitor haha

I would agree with you, but that doesn't explain the VAST difference in graphic quality when I switch it to 1080p mode.

Cool, just turned it down to 720p for the PC, seems to work much smoother. I'm still wondering if there's a way to tell if it's the TV lagging because it's not supposed to do 1080p, or my PC. I have yet to do it for the Xbox, but maybe doing that will answer my question.

Hey everyone. In December I went to walmart and bought a Samsung LN32D403 for like 299.99 which was a steal. The TV said that it only does up to 720p. The picture quality is phenominal and it's a great TV, but there's something weird about it. When I plug in my computer via HDMI or my Xbox 360 through HDMI, I have to option on both to go up to 1080p. The picture quality is noticably better when in the 1080p mode. The thing is, on certain computer games, I get some visual lag. I couldn't tell if it's because the TV shouldn't be doing 1080p in the first place, or if because my computer's card simply wasn't strong enough to put out 1080p. Then I started encountering this same problem with the Xbox. Games don't really lag on the Xbox, but I was getting visual sluggishness if you know what I mean.

I was wondering if anyone else has this option on their TVs that are advertised as 720p, and if they could provide more insight on if that's what's causing my lag.
