My idea of a '2d platformer' is pretty simple:

1. main player is in 2D (3D backgrounds are ok)

2. The game is a sidescroller

3. Non-boss 'baddies' die quickly (usually within 1 or 2 strikes).

4. Level design heavily consist of jumping to and from platforms--over various obstacles--while solving various puzzles.

shooters, action games, etc that follow the above criteria are all fine to be included in this list.

I think this allows metroid and mega man even. Actually Metroid feels like it is a very heavy platformer compared to almost everything but those titles you didn't want on the list, BTW some of Crash Bandicoot is side scrolling.

The titles I don't want on the list (Mario, & Sonic) are there because everybody would have them in their top 10. They're both VERY popular and VERY good 2d platformers. What I was hoping to accomplish with this list is finding more original 2d platformers, finding new titles we may have not played before and I've definitely found some and am hoping to find more.

This system didn't age well. Most of the 3d adventure games on the N64 that everybody loves were great games for their time .. but fail miserably in comparison with current 3d adventure offerings. Have fun fighting crappy 3d controls too.

The SNES has aged better than the N64 (2d sidescrollers stand the test of time).

The Banjo Kazooie games are amazing on the n64 though.

BTW: even games that are 3d that follow consistent conventions with 2d platformers (think: pandemonium, little big planet, or crash bandicoot) are fine for this list.

Please list your top 10 *2D* platformers all time not including super mario and sonic the hedgehog games. Let's face it: several sonic, and super mario bro games will be in everybody's top 10. Also, please do not include an entire 'series'. If you like Vectorman 1 & 2 ... only list 1 or give both their own spot somewhere in your top 10; granted they both deserve a spot.

*** UPDATE ***

**************

1. Dynamite Heady, Genesis

2. Oddworld: Abe's Exodus, PS

3. Mischief Makers, N64

4. Contra, NES

5. Alien Soldier, Genesis

6. Crash Bandicoot, PS (borderline 3d platformer, but an exception can be made -- great game).

7. Earthworm Jim, Genesis

Need help coming up with a complete list of 10 (w/o mario and sonic games it's hard).

* Planescape Torment

* Vampire Bloodlines: Masquarade

* Baulder's Gate II

* Arcanum

So you're assuming that I can't have critical comments towards the current landscape of the gaming industry and still purchase games?
