When an intensity comes from having to act fast because you, well, can't move, that seems kind of... artificial, no? It'd be like if a game randomly caused you to stop being able to move for a second at a time, and you're all "CRAP CRAP CRAP GET AWAY". It would make it more intense, but not in a good way, in my opinion.

GabuEx

Yes, you can move. Just flick the pointer off screen and you'll do a Sense Move Dodge in that direction. If you point it back at the screen, you go straight back to FP. This can all be done in under a second. Takes a little practice to get the timing down, but its effective once you get the hang of it.

Prescsion aiming on the move is very difficult in real life. You don't see snipers running while they are aiming. So yes, stopping to aim prescisely is realistic, not artifical.

AMEN! sorry, I had to say that loud. This is all I have been trying to say in regards to the controls. It feels like the FP modes were just strapped in there to appeal to Prime only Metroid players. There isn't a single good element in the game when you turn to FP mode. Is it functional? sure you can beat the game. Should they have done it? No, not in a million years... but they did anyway and it mars the game. It was all because of a bad design decision to see if they could pull off Metroid with only 2 buttons and a d-pad again. raahsnavj

I defintately have to disagre there. I think it adds a lot. Back in the old days if you wanted to look for secrets, all you did was roll around and drop bombs. The Super Metroid Scan Visor was nice, but you couldn't do that in the 3D of Other M. The Prime's scanning made things a lot more interesting. The FPS Perspective lets you have the Scanning aspect of Prime.

When I'm searching for goodies, I prefer switching to FP and scanning the area, as opposed to just rolling around and dropping bombs.

My only gripe is that it'd be nice to use missles out of FPS, but I understand why they did it. With the Auto Aim, they didn't want you to just be able to Auto Aim kill bosses with missles. it adds to the challange of the boss fights.

And they DID pull off Metroid with only the D pad and 4 buttons (1,2, A, and B.) IMO its a very innovative and fun use of the Wii controller. Its not perfect (Bigger D pad pls) but it works very well.

But everyone is entitled to thier opinion, to each his own. I personally hate to Dual Joystick controls of most FPS's on PS3 and Xbox 360. Most FPS kiddies would flame the hell out of me for that, but its all a matter of preference.

I just finished the original Metroid on NES. I had a blast and really enjoyed it, but I'm wondering which one to play next? If I'm correct, there's a Metroid II and III but I've heard they're not worth playing.

I own Super Metroid and a SNES(Played it when I was growing up), and two of the three Metroid Primes. I just want to get caught up on the series.

Thanks in advance

Godofnerdyness

Anyone who says Metroid II isn't worth playing has no idea what they are talking about. It is a very fun game, and introduced many of the Metroid mainstays we know and love today, like the Plasma Beam, Space Jump, and Spider / Jump Balls.

Stay in order and go with Metroid II. Its definately worth the 20 bucks you'd spend on Ebay or used at a Gamestop. If all else fails you can download a Gameboy emulator and play it that way.

Metroid is one of the few franchises I get the game in the order they come out. I started with Metroid. I never had a GB so I never played Metroid 2 (but I watched speed runs of the whole game just to experience it), Super Metroid comes second, then Fusion, the Zero Mission. Then I went through all the Primes, in order. and finally other M. Of course replaying Zero Mission and Super Metroid about every year at least once. EDIT: Oh, and I realized I didn't mention Hunters or Pinball... that is because those aren't actually Metroid games IMO.raahsnavj

You can find Metroid II used on ebay at decent prices (Don't bother with the new in box, those are pricey.) Remeber GBA's play regular Game Boy games too. Always a chance to find one at a gamestop, or if all else fails there are Game Boy emulators out there, you can play it on PC.

I'd definately recomend playing it. It introduced Metroid Mainstays like the Plasma Beam, Space Jump, and Spider Ball. It was a lot of fun and probably the best Game Boy game. I used to love playing it on my old Super Game Boy, even had its own color pallete and screen border.

Hunters was BARELY a Metroid game. Its the only one I havn't beaten. I'm working on it right now just to cut that last notch in my Metroid history. The game itself is ok, the touch screen controls are just really akward. And yes, Pinball doesn't count. Thats like saying Mario Party or Link's Crossbow Training are part of the Mario and Zelda series.

SPOILERS!!!!

I'm at a boss fight with the hive. What the heck is with the controls here?!?You have to stop your shooting, point at the screen, lock on, fire, and then return to normal stance to dodge all the incoming attacks. How the heck is did that ever pass as acceptable controls?!? I've died a dozen times ina row here. Any pointers guys?

The game has some nice graphics and great level design...but man...the controls are wonky as all heck!

boostud

Dont forget you can still Dodge while you're in FPS mode, just flick the pointer off screen in the direction you want to Dodge. You can Flick, Dodge, the point back on screen straight back to FPS mode all in under a second.

The Diffusion beam is HUGELY helpful for the flies too. Don't bother Lethal Striking the ones on the ground, its easier do just use Diffusion. I could run around until all the flies were in a cluster, blast um with a Diffusion shot, then go to FP and hit the boss with a couple missles before the next batch of flies comes out. Rinse and repeat.

Its a challanging fight, but thats the fight design, not the controls. My only control complaint is that I wish the Wii D pad was bigger. Its tricky to run diagonally with that small, stiffer D Pad. A larger one (like on my old school Original DS for example) would make it perfect.

See in my experience I was always under the impression that most people found Echoes to be one of their least favorite. Which was always sad to me. But now that Other M has come out a lot of people out of nowhere have been claiming they love it! It's about time.

Darth-Samus

I'm one of those that puts Echos way down. I really did not like being restricted by Beam Ammo. Speant most of the game using the Power Beam, and only using the other beams when I needed them. I've always enjoyed being able to either swap to beams whenever, or each beam upgrade powers the beam up more. I really didn't like the restriction.

And the mere PRESENCE of a multiplayer to appease FPS kiddies knocked it down a few points in my book. Its still a very good game and I enjoyed it, but when held to the high standards that comes with Metroid ranking, its low in my book.

If you are ranking the best Sports cars, you might rank a Lamborginni before a Prosche. Doesn't mean you still wouldn't love a Porche, just the Lamborginni is better :)

Given that I finally got the chance to experience the game meself, here's my ranking among the entire series, excluding Trilogy for obvious reasons.

  1. Super Metroid
  2. Metroid Prime 1
  3. Metroid Prime 3
  4. Metroid Prime 2
  5. Metroid/Zero Mission
  6. Metroid: Other M
  7. Metroid II
  8. Metroid Prime Hunters
  9. Metroid Prime Pinball

TheFallenDemon

I'll follow your lead, but add my own ranking. its a bit different.

  1. Super Metroid
  2. Metroid Other:M
  3. Metroid Zero Mission
  4. Metroid Prime
  5. Metroid II
  6. Metroid Fusion
  7. Metroid Prime 3
  8. Metroid
  9. Metroid Prime 2
  10. Metroid Prime: Hunters

To me, Zero Mission, while a "remake" technically, is a whole different game than Metroid. The Beam Ammo thing in Prime 2 really turned me off. And Metroid Prime Pinball doesn't count. Thats like counting Mario Party, or Link's Crossbow Training, as part of the Mario and Zelda series.

Other M really is the best way to put Metroid into 3D. I too give it a 9/10, because there are a few issues thats keeps it from being perfect.

Overall Other M is a 9/10 to me and despite its flaws, one of my favorite metroid games to date.

NaveedLife

I agree with the score completely. Although one flaw could be fixed by Nintedo with some new Wii controlls, as opposed to being a M:OM design issue. A larger, less stiff D pad on the Wiimote would make a huge difference.

I never noticed up until Other: M, since I didn't use the D Pad for much more than NES games. But it is very small and stiff. I have a really hard time running in the diagonal directions on a dime.

On the other hand, I dusted off my DS and picked Prime: Hunters a couple days ago. I just didn't like how its the ONLY Metroid game I havn't beaten, so I'm gonna check that last one off my list. I have an old, Original Issue DS. The D pad is large and not nearly as stiff as the Wiimote one. Its SO much easier to move in all 8 directions.

A better Wiimote D pad should definately be something they think about for the Wiimotes if they plan on using the D Pad more.

I'll never understand the obsession with subtitles. The time you take to focus on and read the subtitles takes away from what you can focus in the picture. You were reading the text so you missed some detail in the background, or some action on screen. Great. I can understand prefering the japanese versions if you speak japanese. But how can anyone prefer hearing them make unidentifiable noises while you read what they're saying?

It just seems who prefer subtitles to dubs just like to think they're "cooler" for it. HAHA, I'm better than YOU because you're dumb and watch dubbies. Just read about my epicness, I only watch SUBTITLES!

While I would definately recomend you play the old Metroids, its not a must. Just go to the Nintendo Channel and watch the "Metroid and Me" refreasher video. It'll get you caught up on the story.

Only one before this (Timeline wise) you can't get on the VC is Return of Samus. This game alone is the reason why the 3DS needs a game boy virtual console. it is a GREAT game. I had such a blast playing it. Just wish I wouldn't have lost the game over the years. :(
