I still say there is no way to predict next gen. I mean, logically, it does seem the TC has a good point about the non-gamers, casuals, hardcore, and how Nintendo could come armed next gen to appeal to all 3. But the market is very unpredictable. And there IS NO Loyalty whatsoever in this industry. N64 proved that. People who had played NES and SNES went to PS1. Now why is that? N64 sold not nearly as well as SNES from day one. Nobody knew what type of games PS1 would have when it first released, yet was a huge hit anyway.
Does it just have to do with change and nothing else? Were people saying "well PS1 has teh CD and teh N64 still has cartridges. PS1 wins!". If it really is that black and white, then this is the reason Wii has won this gen. They changed up the way games are controlled drastically, while PS3 and 360 did not. So, going by only that, if Wii 2 comes out with no new innovations, and PS4 and 720 come out with motion controls that are "better" than Wii (or a new way of controlling altogether that appeals to many people), then Nintendo could fall to last place once again.
There are arguments for why Nintendo could come out on top next gen or fall back to 3rd place next gen. I can see it both ways, but it is still not possible to predict what will happen.

During the N64 era, Nintendo's philosophy was different that it is now, in that the big games released for the console, Nintendo's core franchises (ie; SM64 and Oot) appealed to same depographic that the PS1's franchises appealed to, core gamers. Only PS1 came armed with many more of these big core franchises as the third parties who previously supported the SNES (ie; sqaure and FF) moved on to PS due to the change in format. Nintendo has changed their philosophy with the Wii and DS, and the market at large with the Wii so the two cannnot be compare. On top of having the same core franchises they always had, they have a number of huge bridge franchises that they have built in this genration that appeal to consumers of all varieties... hence the ace up the sleever I was reffering to.
