The more i delve into the gaming community, the more i seem to distance myself from it.
Recent arguments on forums and in person and such, have led me to beleive i am not simply of a different opinion than most, but am something of an outcast.
The problem is, i failed to notice when this happened/started to happen.
What puzzles me, i cannot work it out, is when precisely, did developers (and the community) begin to put more effort and time into multiplayer, and useless features than into the core of the game?
In recent time, it seems to me as if the majority of people view Multiplayer now as the core of a good game, and Single Player comes secondary to that, and only exists to build you up for the multiplayer. This is a completely alien concept to me. I simply cannot understand why a person would willingly accept a compromised single player experience in favor of multiplayer, or 'features' such as forge mode, which i will get to in a little while.
I constantly find myself thinking "This could have used an extra chapter, or a few more coridoors of action" when playing games such as Halo 3, or Gears of War, only to find the extra effort had gone into producing multiplayer maps and game modes. This frustrates me immensely, as i am paying my fair share for the game as well, but i do not want multiplayer. I'm not interested in it in the slightest.
Maybe it's just my anti-social nature rearing it's ugly head, but i genuinely do not see the appeal of multiplayer.
People like me must surely (unfortunately) be in the minority nowadays, which is a great shame in my opinion, as the emphasis on development shifts greatly from crafting an interesting, involving storyline, and brilliant puzzles or gameplay sequences, in favor of balancing weapons and making sure maps are symmetrical.
As if the shift in multiplayers favor wasn't enough with that, games like Farcry Instincts, Timesplitters and Halo 3 even further shift the attention of the ADHD aflicted public to useless features such as recording modes, or terribly limited map editors. These additional features must surely require a lot of additional developer attention. Specifically these crude editors, as they cannot simply throw their own editor on there, as that would simply not do without proper equipment and advanced knowledge. So they must develop and entirely new editor, in most cases using a crude real-time in engine editor, binding the controllers buttons to certain console commands, such as spawning items or tiles.
This takes a lot of effort to produce. Effort that i personally feel should either be spent producing more high quality multiplayer maps, or another campaign mission. (Or fixing broken parts of the game.)
I know that Multiplayer seems to be taking over, and i can begrudgingly accept that, but how developers can waste their time on such useless features when they should be crafting a finer experience i will never understand.
Leave the editing to those with the know how to do it properly on a PC, don't waste your, or your customers time.
