Yes and this comes from the company that didn't put any customisation options for their product in its wallpaper or anything to let people make their console look the way they want it to look like. This is coming from a console that doesn't let the consumer to choose if they wanted Bluray or not. This is coming from a company that is supporting (and developed) a format that is only winning in the Americas.

I'm not impressed at all by Sony.

The wallpaper thing will be fixed in a future firmware upgrade(same as the PSP). Also you could say the same thing about DVD....I want my games on CD's not DVD, I want that option...you see how silly that seems. Also Sony let's you install a completely different OS on the system if you choose....Linux to be exact....I find your comment funny considering your name is GNUTUX or GNU is not Unix and Tux being the official mascot of linux. Maybe that is intentional, maybe not, I would figure you would be a supporter of Sony for this.

Umm, no they aren't. link

Yes, they're making money on premium consoles sold.

Linky

Factor in the 3 year warranty at approx cost of 1.25 billion dollars.

And that doesn't change the fact that they have yet to post a single profit yet.

Why the hell should I care whether a COMPANY is making money or not making money in their gaming division? I care about playing great games and buying a console for under $400. There is a TON of start-up costs (design, development, production, logistics, advertising, etc.) that take a long time to recoup. I'm a gamer and I care about games. He's an executive and cares about $$$ - which is obvious from his statements.

I love how these Sony execs always fall back to something other than "playing games". I'm surprised he didn't quote some PS2 sales figures in there as well.

Because if MS does not post a profit this generation in the Game Division it will most likely be folded. Remember MS has investors to answer to.

When did they say they want it to be a 10 year product? He is attacking MS for something that MS never commited to or even mentioned. That's pretty lame. The average console life is about 5 years, so if MS plays alongside the average than I don't see any reason for Sony to critisize.

IMO, MS has there eyes on the longterm goal...which is dominating the market. With the 360 they have a solid chance at destroying the success of the original xbox and taking a much larger portion of the market. Eventually, with successful generations they will turn a profit. Nobody says that they need to go from the struggling original xbox to a money making machine all within 2 generations. MS has deep enough pockets to be into gaming for many many years to come...so there is no reason to rush it. As long as they provide competitive gameplay with a great lineup of games at a great price...they will be fine.

Your confusing life-span with generation span. The NES 9 years, the SNES 10 years, PS1 9 years.

yes but have the ps1 and ps2s been that great of sellers to make up for a hit like that? i think i remember seeing 4 BILLION dollars in the red. it's going to take them years to make up something like that. i also have a tough time believing that sony is going to be making a profit on the systems already.

its also funny to hear that sony is going for software emulation after all this time, since that was a major argument point for why the ps3 bc was sooooooo much better.

the fact of the matter is that all the higher-ups at sony need to keep their mouths shut until ps3 starts doing better.

It's ironic he's ripping into 360 and how it can never be a 10 year product, maybe he has amnesia and is forgetting about the PS2...:|

thirstychainsaw

Umm the PS2 is still being developed and supported and is currently selling better then any of the Next Gen systems.

hasn't sony lost billions of dollars on the ps3 so far? that's crazy.....

once again sony reps keep proving how out of touch they are with the real world.

NickG1215

Yes, Sony is in the red on the PS3, however, both the PS1 and PS2 have been major profit makers for Sony, both of which were initially not making a profit. Also Sony is getting ready to begin making a profit on every system sold as they have refined their manufacturing and the cost of the Blue Ray diode has decreased substantially. Also the move to software emulation that has already been created is another way to increases profits.

i dont get this 10 year product thing. who wants it to be a 10 year product? they can release a new console after about 6 years with way better graphics and everything the 360 lacks for cheap. in the meantime the ps3 will then look like crap and be old.cliff122316

You realize that when Sony says 10 year life cycle that doesn't mean they won't introduce a new system on par time schedule wise. It just means there will be support and development for the system for 10 years. This is true of the PS1 which had it's best sales after the debut of the PS2 and will be true for the PS2 which continues to outsell all three current systems. I see a trend here. MS killed there original XBOX after about 5 years, maybe less I don't know the exact timeframe, but way less then 10.
