Try forking out 870USD for a PS3, or $100USD for each PS3 game you buy. Yeah, thats the crap we Australians have to put up with if we buy retail here. Thank god for region free and import sites.
Software emulation BC is built into the firmware. Every single PS3 has the software emulation in it, no matter what. Even if you got the PS3 that has the hardware emulation.
There area whole lot of region free BRs though, just gotta take a quick looksy on the back of there covers to see what region(s) the movie is. A couple region free's that come to mind are the Pirates movies and Casino Royale.
Theres also a complied list here, http://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=8606
All you will need is an adapter (not power converter) to take the US power plug to your UK power plug. Or just go to your local PC shop and buy a PC power cable. Or best, like what I did with my US PS3, was I already had a spare PC power cable laying around.
PS3 has a transformer built in, all PS3 units are 110v-240v
download = 800mb highly compressed. CELL decompresses it streaming off HDD ...
Blu-ray disk = 800mb cache data ...
Now you ask why you need the disk to run the game -PIRACY! if you only had to install the game it would be easy to steal -> hell who would buy the game rent it and install in on as many PS3's as possible ... which would result in the devs. getting **** all $$ ..choasgod
