Hello friends, I'm back again with yet another review for my loyal fan. That's right fan, as in singular, as in I'm pretty sure the only person reading these now is Nicasso_.
I know I said that I would have this up by 6:00 P.M. today but life is just too unpredictable to plan these kinds of things. So sorry if I made you wait.
Now on to business. I'm sad to say that nobody guessed the review correctly for this week. Though Nicasso_ made a few very good guesses, it seems that the amazing mystery prize will go to nobody once again.
With my rant out of the way it's time to get to the review:
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the world of Haruhi Suzumiya.
No this isn't the Twilight Zone, but trust me it's just as strange. This is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Now you may be wondering who is Haruhi Suzumiya and why is she so sad. Well she's a typical high school girl, who believes in aliens, time-travelers, espers, ghosts, monsters, evil syndicates, and the anime/manga super heroes who fight said evil syndicates.
The series of course revolves around this girl, but if you want to understand the story you have to know about the other main character as well. The series begins by introducing Kyon, another character just entering high school. He's pretty much the polar opposite of Haruhi, he's very practical and doesn't believe in anything supernatural or other-worldly. Now, on his first day during introductions the girl who sits behind him introduces herself by saying:
"I'm Haruhi Suzumiya, from East Junior High. First off, I'm not interested in ordinary people. But if any of you are aliens, time-travelers, or espers please come see me. That is all."
Needless to say she makes quite the first impression. As the first few weeks pass by, Kyon learns more and more about Haruhi's weird behaivor. Such as painting weird symbols on the school track field, joining every club and then quitting soon after, and dating numerous boys but never staying with them longer than a few days.
Haruhi refuses to talk with people she sees as "ordinary" so hardly anyone ever approaches her. One day on a whim Kyon decides to start a conversation with her. This results in Haruhi becoming somewhat attached to Kyon. In fact, he's pretty much the only one she talks to. During one of their conversations, Haruhi comes up with the random idea to start a club of her own.
This is more or less the very first episode/chapter of the series. Trust me, it's a lot more interesting than you think. The way I describe it this seems like your typical high school romance series with a strange female character. INCORRECT!
This is anything but your typical anything. You never know what to expect from this series, especially once they introduce the other main characters who also end up joining Haruhi's club, The SOS Brigade. These members include an alien, a time-traveler, and a esper. Ironically, Kyon is the only one who finds out about this while Haruhi, who is actually searching for these kinds of things remains oblivious.
So what can you expect from this series? Space wars, rock concerts, bad movie making, sports tournaments, annonying computer geeks, murder mysteries, girls in bunny costumes, sexual harassment, blackmail, and your occasional random battle scenes.
It's almost like they took every anime stereotype in existence, rolled them into a ball, threw them into a blender, and produced a delicious smoothie of Japanese randomness.
Mmmmmm, Smoothie
For those of you who have heard about this series but have yet to pick it up I must ask, WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH YOU!?
This is without a doubt one of the greatest anime/manga achievements in the history of anime/manga. If you don't enjoy this series than there is something deeply wrong with you.
With that said, it's time to get to the technical crap. The manga consists of ten light novels. The first is called The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and each title afterwards is changed. The first novel was adapted into an anime that consists of 14 episodes which has been translated to English. Now supposedly a second season has been confirmed but there's no word on when it'll be released.
Now that you've heard about this series, GO WATCH/READ IT NOW!!!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So what did you think, was I too mean and forceful towards the end? If so than I apologize to those I may have offended. But anyways I really enjoyed doing this one. In fact this was the first series I intended on reviewing but things happened and so it came out in fourth.
Still that doesn't degrade its awesomeness in any way, shape, or form.
It's Random Transition Time!
Time for the unveiling of the clues:
- "Don't get bored until then..." Haruhi, the main character, is bored with everyday life and that's a major aspect of the first season.
- "Maybe join a club or something at school."In the first episode/chapter, Haruhi starts a club in an attempt to cure her boredom.
- "Think of another word for help." SOS is a code for help, and as we all know the name of Haruhi's infamous club is the SOS Brigade.
So did you get the clues, sorry if you didn't. I think I might be making these too hard so I'll try to make them a little more easy next time around.
Now that you've read my review go ahead and review my review. Give me some feedback people! And thank you to my loyal fan out there for all of your support.
So I guess I should leave a clue behind about my next review like I promised before. Then again maybe I won't. OK, don't get mad and send a ninja to kill me. Yes, that was the clue and no it isn't Naruto.
And with that obscure message said I shall take my leave.
