As I said in another comment: the new generation of gamers grew up with FPS games -- shoot, shoot and more mindless shooting. Story driven games bore this impatient crowd (like that OuroborosChoked guy) to death. Japanase turn-based RPG, forget about it with this new generation.
(I played MSG4. Saying that the game "plays for you to get to the next melodramaic, whiny cutscene" is totally stupid and illustrates what this new impatient generation of gamers is about.)
The problem is a different (new) generation of gamers outside of Japan grew up with FPS games or 3rd-person 3D shooting games; whereas the generation before it (my generation) grew up with Japanese games (side-scrolling games, platformers, 1-on-1 fighting games, story-driven and turn-based RPG). They need to find a delicate balance that appeals to the new generation of western gamers and still keep their unique style. Tastes have changed. They need to adapt without alienating their own nature. Not easy.
