@siul129: Same. I have a first generation LCD Steam Deck & that thing just eats up anything that's thrown at it. Steam OS & support is rock solid & the games library via Steam is insane. I mainly buy all my software when it's on sale, or in bundles, so my entire library is dirt cheap. Can't remember the last time I shelled out £60:00+ for any game. I just refuse to do that. I'm not that desperate gamer who has to have day 1 purchases. I've never EVER pre-ordered & that mentality has stuck with me since forever.
A Switch 2 purchase looks to be a very remote possibility for me, as it stands but the fanfare should be interesting to see unfold.
@DavidinCT: I think the challenge for Nintendo will be balancing its unique identity with the demands of current-gen gaming. While the Switch remains immensely popular, the growing competition from powerful consoles and gaming PCs means that Nintendo needs to strike a good balance between portability, performance and innovation in the Switch 2.
From what's been circulating, news-wise, I just don't see a whole lot to get excited about but we'll see.
From my own personal perspective, my Steam Deck has been my go to handheld for the last 3 years or so. Literally all my gaming is done on that thing flawlessly, with visuals & performance to match. It's going to take something monumentally awesome to pull me away from that.
Honestly? It's hard to get excited about the Switch 2 right now. It basically just looks like a nice Switch upgrade & that's just not enough for me to get on board, especially with other handhelds that probably trounce it in the hardware & software department. Are the meager new releases enough to justify a purchase? Maybe years ago but not anymore. I'm just not desperate enough to cough up the cash to play a few decent titles. There's far too much awesome software out there available on the other handhelds to fulfill all my gaming needs.
This will possibly be an impulse buy for most people because y'know, it's Nintendo but I'm not feeling it atm.
Hard to say if the video was the real deal but it will be interesting to see what kind of carrot Nintendo dangle in front of the consumer but the handheld market is actually looking very strong right now, with a lot of excellent, powerful & reasonably priced hardware, that can more than cope with pretty much anything that's thrown at them. Fact is though, you'll still be locked into a walled garden with Nintendo, with no hope of expanding your library. I don't think that's going to be enough to pull me in personally but there will be a boat load of consumers who will buy it, regardless. Hopefully, this time, they will power their hardware with something better than a Pentium 266 processor. We shall see.
@bdrtfm: You misunderstand me, I'm talking about the future proofing of this particular console for the next 3-4 years. Pretty safe to say, the PS5 Pro will be very solid & will tackle anything that's thrown at it. Not the distant future of gaming as a whole. I have a PS3 that's collected dust for at least 18 years or so. It's never been used for at least that amount of time & is literally a museum piece now. Played it for the first 3 years of it's creation but after that, went back to PC gaming, since the companies I work for, send a new PC over to me every couple of years. That's how I keep up with new gaming needs. I always have a very high end desktop, so I've never needed a console since the PS3. I'm also not a brand conscious person, I have no allegiance to any particular game franchise but having said that, the PS5 Pro is the only console that has really grabbed my interest, since the hardware specs look quite impressive.
@theexception@bdrtfm: No, not really. As game consoles go, this will tackle pretty much anything developers can throw at this with ease, for at least 4-5 years without breaking a sweat. I'm talking the future proofing of 'this' console.
If you can stretch to £700.00 here in the UK, this is absolutely the console to go for. Pretty much nothing it can't deal with, from a performance perspective & reasonable future proof, for all the high end games current & incoming. It's premium for a reason. If you're serious about your gaming, the extra couple of hundred quid isn't worth crying about. Just buy the damned thing already.
I completely skipped PS4 & PS5. Never looked at any Nintendo Switches or any XBOX consoles. Pretty much skipped the lot. I did jump on a 256GB Steam Deck at first launch but honestly, hardware-wise, apart from the Steam Deck, I just haven't bothered with consoles for a considerably long time. I have a really powerful PC, so that's kept me in good stead for quite some time. I dunno, there's just something about the last decade of console gaming that all just felt a bit meh for me. I have a PS3 collecting dust on a shelf, along with my Oculus Quest 2. That had a lot of potential but the VR market has taken a nose dive & I doubt very much I'll ever switch either of those devices back on again.
I'm looking for a massive leap in hardware to get me interested in console gaming again. The incremental upgrades don't really do it for me, so I'll just meander along & wait until that quantum leap (literally) in tech happens & start saving basically. We just don't have killer games anymore either. I remember literally buying a Pentium 256 MMX waaaaaaay back in the day, just to play quake. Everything was just so exciting back then. The massive leaps in visuals when all the Voodoo cards came out & it was just an awesome time to be a gamer. Not sure what's happened to me over the years but I'm just not that enamored by it all these days. getting older, no time to play games really.
Not particularly impressive specs so far but I'm taking all of this with a pinch of salt at this point in time. Right now, the Steam Deck has spoiled me, so anything less than a top end OLED Steam Deck, is going to be a hard pass, especially if it gets released some time in mid/late 2025. On top of that, we don't have a price yet.
