Honestly save your money and upgrade to a new DX11 card that can play games on higher resolutions, because you never know when you'll buy a new monitor.

I had an HD4870 512mb because at the time I had a similar resolution on my old monitor as you, however after a month or two I bought an ACER 23in. 1080p monitor and I've regretted buying the HD4870 specifically the 512mb version.

I'm just going to say this, never go cheap with your PSU.

If you just want to run one HD4890 get a EA650 Antec Earth Watts, or a corsair 650 tx

earlier today my windows 7 said i needed 2 updates so i went into the update center and did it...then i turned off my pc and now when i try to turn it on the card fan is like freakin out its going fast to slow every 2 seconds...and on the card i had 4 red lights popping up....its not my mobo because i am now running off my 9600GT.....

im wondering if the card died or what...any ideas?...should i try restoring my pc to an earlier time and putting the card back in?

stereointegrity

Well your card should still be under manufacturer warranty.

What were the updates for? security?

i didn't reapply thermal paste, coz i don't have alcohol , but i spread the paste and made it less thick, and it dropped some 2c i think now is at 48c before was 50c if i put a fan in front of cpu it only drops 1 c and lowers rpm i also had my eye on arctic cooling freezer pro 7 , but the only problem is that i have a small cheap case (i think is middle tower?)vegita92
Well it should work in a mid tower case. Second of all if you didn't get rid of previous paste it isn't going to drop significantly because you'll still have too much. You can buy any 90%+ Isopropyl alcohol from stores such as target.

i think i applied a lot. the thermal paste was thick also.. my case has side window open. i think i will buy a aftermarket cooler... anyway i'm on bios right now , and I'm too scared to install windows, coz the cpu might get hotter. :( right now is at 48 c should i install windows? vegita92

Well that's the case, if you're running at stock settings with a stock cooler you'll be fine. But thwe case is you used too much thermal paste. You're suppose to drop a little bit like the size of a rice and evenly spread it out. Another factor is that the heat sink is not securely installed.

P.S. if you want a new cooler get the Arctic cooler 7 pro, but only get it if you plan on overclocking.

That PSU can put out 42a (504w)to the 12v rails. It will run it just fine.opamando

^^^^^^^

You calculate amps by dividing power to the 12v rail/12

Which in your case if you look at the newegg picture it shows 504W to the 12v rail

504/12=42amps

Honestly I'm sick and tired of ATI and it's poor driver support, i'm also sick of being out performed on games simply because some games were designed better with Nvidia. Yes I probably would have saved some money but as I said it's like i'm only forking over 240 dollars with EVGA. Also it seems the GTX285 will last me for a good 2 possibly 3 years with my current set up simply because there are no games coming out that would convince me to upgrade for.

As for the 2gb version, I wanted EVGA and the promotion for the batman game(tiger direct) only had the GTX285 2gb version for EVGA so since I was going to buy that game either way it's like I only paid 50 dollars more. Also I rather be safe than sorry, I bought the 512mb HD4870 and I regret buying it, so I decided I won't make the same mistake again.

But yeah I understand a lot of people's concerns but hell my birthday is coming up and I have some extra money so I decided i'll just go for it. Also I rather go for second generation of DX11 cards then first gen. Specially since very few games will take advantage of dx11.

I play in 1920x1080, I just bought a EVGA GTX285 2gb version for 411 (no tax and 2 dollar shipping). Suppose to get the new batman game (50 dollar value), I used bing suppose to get 10% cash back, comes out to be 41 dollars plus I am going to sell my HD4870 512mb to a friend for 80 dollars.

So it actually comes to be 240 USD. I include the batman game because I planned on buying it eitherway.

I also figure if the new DX11 Nvidia cards are really worth the upgrade I could use the step up program. (Have to love EVGA)

But those cards would not come out until probably February/March 2010
