@prodigy84bg: maybe because they think it's fun? I mean there is no written rule that says "nobody who's over 12 should be playing this type of game". In fact, nintendo's most loyal fanbase are 80's and 90's kids. 12 year olds think they are too mature to play pokemon or mario.
My point is, there is no right or wrong in gaming, you either like certain games or you don't. If you don't like pokemon, great, but that doesn't make you right or wrong about it. It's like saying "I don't understand how people are over 60 could like heavy metal". It's not that hard to understand. The problem with the gaming community is that some of them are way too emotionally invested in the consoles they support to the point they try to denigrate those who don't share their points of view about "what games should and should not be playing".
@totalobvi: I'm not saying they won't release a new Mario kart game, eventually it will come, but I think we are at least 3-4 years removed from a new MK (double dash came in 2003, Wii in 2008 and 8 in 2014). This is different architecture they are working with, so they are basically starting from scratch regarding a new mario kart game. Even if they are ditching the 3DS (which they have not given any signs of with many games scheduled to be released this next year), it doesn't mean we'll see a brand new mario kart game soon.
The footage we saw was clearly a Mario kart 8 port, it had the same designs and displays (coins, laps, fonts) minus King Boo and the double item feature. It's clearly not recycled wii U footage because of those small tweaks. Besides, it was gameplay, not cinematics like the Zelda clip from 2011. And regarding the Wii U, don't forget they later showed gameplay of a New Super Mario Bros game for Wii U before releasing the console and guess what, that was actually NSMBU, a new game they had been working on. I'd guess all those games they showed in the trailer will be released in 2017 because it was all gameplay.
Why show gameplay of a port of a game that already exists if you don't plan to release it closer to the console's launch window? It would be silly. You also have to factor that Mario kart 8 is one of the Wii U's most popular games, so it would make sense for them to lure that fanbase to the new system. Same thing with Splatoon.
@totalobvi: I think it's safe to say both the Splatoon and Mario kart games we saw are remakes rather than new games, especially given it's been 2 years since their release dates. Mario Kart 8 was released 6 years after Mario kart Wii and we already saw footage of a Mario kart game on the Switch that was basically Mario Kart 8 with a few tweaks.
I don't have any info about Smash but I read a rumour sometime ago that they were working on a Smash port with all DLC included. They basically dropped the ball with the Wii U so it would make sense for them to have their 3 most popular franchises from the last gen on their new system.
@Xristophoros: I know you are probably right, but I would really suck if they just ignored the people who have supported their struggling console through thick and thin. Just having the option to play those games while the console is docked would be enough.
Either way, I think it's safe to say Splatoon, Smash and Mario Kart are getting remakes for Swtich, so that's basically 180 bucks on games most wii U users already have.
