I don't think they're bad choices, though they wouldn't be my first. Still, there's too much gritty realism out there, and Rogen and Goldberg have a comedic edge that's been lacking in adventure films recently. In general, movie adaptations of games have been terrible--and Rogen probably knows that. Who wants to be attached to a near-certain dud? I'd still like it to happen, since the last Indy sucked and there just hasn't been anything like it since that lived up to expectations.
Thematically, this doesn't look bad, and the art direction is ... well, it's fine for what we've seen. But I'm most concerned about gameplay mechanics, and we know next to nothing about that. I'm not a blind hater of DA2; I thought it was a fun game that kept me entertained to the end, even if it wasn't as good as the first. I also thought the story of the first game had glaring issues. Nevertheless, I'm interested.
It was pretty obvious from the beginning that the $100 price difference basically came down to the Kinect, given the otherwise similar specs on both consoles. As to Sony doing this to somehow undercut Microsoft ... I think it's a bit self-serving. Sony has not been pushing its own camera system the same way as Microsoft has pushed Kinect, and Sony's motion tech hasn't been as generally successful. I doubt that Microsoft would have changed anything even if they had known about this. The companies just have different paths when it comes to motion sensing.
@HerbalVideogame @ernelson1976 I liked that they were moving toward all-digital and away from physical discs. It was a good idea that I support, and wish they could have found a way to do it without pissing everyone off.
I'd rather not have to have the disc in while playing, which is why I wasn't too upset about the daily check-in. So, I guess we're stuck in the last gen, still. Oh well.
I suppose this matters less if you're doing digital downloads, which is probably how I'll be buying most games. If I get the Xbox One. Which I still haven't decided yet.
I guess it's a good thing they're holding it back, but starting from scratch is pretty much going to guarantee this game isn't going to make back what they've spent on it. Unless it's a huge hit, which seems unlikely at this point. It's tough for mid-list games to make back their funding even under good circumstances. Looking at that footage...well, there's no way Bethesda was going to win. I completely understand the decision. It couldn't have been easy.
This is the sort of news that could really go both ways. We know virtually nothing about Dragon Age 3 (or whatever it's being called now). At some level, I'd consider this good news, since DA was always heavier on RPG elements than Mass Effect, even DA2. But given what happened with DA2 compared to the original ... let's just say, I'm concerned. I can hope that BioWare has learned its lessons, but until I see some actual gameplay footage, I'm going to remain skeptical.
It's good to hear that they're working on some new IP as well, but for all its flaws, I still enjoyed Mass Effect more than any new IP last gen, and am happy to see it continue.
@vaibhavp There's nothing contradictory there. Microsoft's policies are what they are because they're trying to move away from physical discs--which is why they're adopting quite a few features common on Steam. Reduction in the cost of producing physical media, along with the eventual end of the used game market will all help developers make money on games. So yes, Microsoft's policies might actually help the game industry from a collapse.
There are reasons to not like the policy from a practical gamer's point of view. The idea that Microsoft's policies aren't there for good, sound financial reasons given the sheer number of developers going under or almost going under---well, it's just silly. There's nothing anti-consumer about Microsoft's policies. They're just giving gamers news that gamers are too stubborn to hear. And we'll be hearing the same song from Sony before long, even if they're willing to tell gamers what they want to hear. For now.
