As a matter of technicality, we, and essentially the western world at large, fall under the umbrella of "representative democracy" (not mutually exclusive with being a "republic") - one of the two primary types of democracy, the other type being "direct democracy." If the latter is what you refer to when you say "democracy," then sure, it is nothing close.

not quite, we are a democratic republic. the government is run by officials chosen to act on the behalf of the people.those officials are chosen in a democratic fasion. however the the officials once elected are free to use their powers regardless of the will of the people. we are most assuredly a republic.
Representative democracy is a pointless term which applies to nearly every government ever conceived.
This doesn't contradict anything I've said.
Democratically elected public officials isn't really a trait you could ascribe to every government.
wasn't meant to, just making the point clear that we are in fact a republic, democratic or not. i believe you've already agreed to that fact, right?
a Representative democracy describes any government that operates as a or contains democratic traits. you could call a council of lords in a medieval monarchy a Representative democracy as soon as they vote on something that affects the people they rule.
