Oh snap! Awesome. My friends ps3 has had the ylod for several months now but he hasnt had the extra money to send it in to sony because he just moved into a new apartment....Totally going to try this.

NO, just run a back up from the dash. You may want to delete videos, music, demos to shorten the time and size of the back up. I did this and did not have to redownload updates. Firmware updates up date a chip hence the term firmware not software.
Forgot to mention it backs up game install data where your updates go so again no you don't have to reinstall updates.
When you do the backup, dont you have to have some sort of external media to transfer it to though?
