@JusticeSoulTuna @garywood69 Yeah, true. It sounds almost paradoxical but I think moralising an issue is actually a terrible thing to do and should be avoided until it's absolutely necessary.
Another part of the issue is the medium of the internet. It's very hard to communicate properly when you're not looking at the person you're talking to. Taking a middle of the road stance on any issue quickly turns into an exercise of qualifying every statement you make so that people will be unable to misinterpret it. If anyone working for a big gaming site actually wrote an article saying that they thought the portrayal of women in gaming wasn't that bad, they'd feel a terrible pressure to end nearly every sentence with an explanation as to why the preceeding claim wasn't a form of bigotry. It's very similar to the way politicans act.
Great episode Danny. I have to say that I seriously doubt that many people care if a game was created by a woman. It's probably lacking in popularity because it's a text-based game called Depression Quest. I'm sure it's great and everything but that's really not a description that's gonna bring in the hoards.
I'd also like to thank you for actually trying to take a cautious and subtle position on the misogyny thing. That whole debate was an absolute nightmare for those of us who tried to weigh-in with a reasoned argument. You just got completely demonised by a very aggressive tribe, no matter what you said. The extreme liberal wing on that argument were nearly as intolerant as the redneck morons who called for that Gamespot reviewer to be fired.
I'm good friends with someone who runs a fairly small game review site and he completely agreed with me on that issue (my position being that we should be trying to improve female portrayals but that pointing them out in a game like GTA is incredibly confusing and unhelpful- just like pointing out racism in a game set in the 1800s would be) but when asked to comment on the issue publicly he just completely caved in to the pressure of political correctness and essentially lied by saying that he thought GTA and Dragon's Crown were hugely damaging to gaming. I think this point needs to really be emphasised and it'd be great if someone on Gamespot addressed it (although I doubt anyone would dare). The people who harass women in the gaming community are absolute disgraces but so are the people who bully anyone who doesn't agree with the absolute progressive stance by throwing around words like 'bigot' and 'misogynist'.
@Gelugon_baat @garywood69 Lol yes? It's also really easy to cover all of the key areas when writing a review. You're making it sound like I'm criticising an exceptional piece of art that is so hard to accomplish that we should begrudge them the trivial oversights.
Nintendo aren't necessarily gonna be the most reliable guide to that though, they've got a bias. In general, they're gonna be as optimistic as possible in case something good happens. And of course there's the concord fallacy which completely drives businesses like this.
@poptart28 Man, no-one's a bigger nintendo fan than me but I think you need to make sure your devotion doesn't turn into delusion. It's just nonsense to say the wiiU is in an OK state for the coming year, it's completely failed to get an audience. The people who bought the wii don't seem to be interested and the hardcore gamers are sticking with sony and microsoft. If you just pretend there isn't a problem, you won't be playing on nintendo consoles for much longer. At some point it's gonna make more sense for them to just make software for the other consoles!
You're not talking about whether it's 3D or not, you're talking about the camera system. They are 2 completely different things.
Whether something is 3D or not isn't a subjective value judgement, it's a clearly defined thing in terms of game design. Even the newest "new super bros" games are 3D. They're just 3D presented with a 2D camera system and control scheme.
Depends on what type of visuals you like. There are plenty of things in this remake that can't be achieved in Dolphin (ambient occlusion and indirect illumination most notably). I agree that if you can run the original in HD it still looks pretty awesome today.
