Capcom has been the most successful Japanese dev this generation.....they have two million sellers in Lost Planet and DR.......are you saying that's a bad thing? If anything, Capcom has proven what everyone says was going to happen - Japanese developers are going to have to eppeal to Western gamers this generation, if they want to survive.[QUOTE="Hulabaloza"][QUOTE="SirRaven"]Sony doesn't have to pay for exclusives because exclusives will come back to them. Alot of the famous franchises on the playstation have been japanese works of art that were major successes in Japan. Seeing as japan has sold like two or three xbox 360s (/sarcasm) there wouldn't be enough of a base for them to make decent profits. That's what capcom has seen with Lost Planet and Dead Rising as well as the Blue Dragon team. When 3rd party devs see that all 360 owners want to play is Halo, they'll reevaluate why they are wasting money porting games there.Dualshockin
Capcom hasnt been as profitable as some believe,LP sold 1 million copies,Capcom spent 40 million on development and marketin,1 million X $59.99=About 60 million?
60-40=20 Million. This is not the amount of a money a developer as big as Capcom should be receiving as returns.
Sega has also been in the red as of late,Japanese developers are not selling anymore.Only Sony and Nintendo have the chance to succeed in Japan.
Just to further drive your point home...you're math works, but you are assuming that all of that $59.99 goes back to capcom. Retail stores make HUGE margins on games, so capcoms profits are actually much less than you illustrated. That is why it is no surprise that DMC is going multi-platform.A price drop is all that’s needed. If the console comes in at around £349.99 within the next 6months Sony will move more PS3 then Microsoft could ever do...PixelgenRead my post above, they are already moving more consoles that Microsoft
If Sony absolutely HAD to sell consoles TODAY, I would say you are right. But they don't just want to sell consoles today, they want to sell them tommorrow, and next year, the year after that, and eight more years after that. That means that a good strategic move is to build a console that has the power and capacity to accept games as developers make them more technologically advanced. We already see this with MGS4. Kojima NEEDS the PS3 to bring his baby to the public. It's not t hat he WON'T make it for Xbox, it's that he CAN'T. More HDTV's are being sold every day. They started slow but they are catching on fast. Blu-ray will respond in kind. Sony is losing exclusives. But they never really HAD those exclusives. That is to say, they never had any kind of contractual agreement with a 3rd party to make games exclusively for Playstation. The developers committed to the Playstation because they felt it was a better system with more mass appeal. And you have YET to read a single thing about a game BECOMING an Xbox exclusive after it was originally billed as a multi-platform or Sony Exclusive. I read today that Sony had sold 2 million PS3's by January 5th (its in the april PSM magazine). That means that in about 6-7 weeks they sold 2 million freakin' consoles! The 360 has been out for about a year and a half and has sold 10 million. That means that it takes the Xbox 1.8 months (54 days) to sell 1 million consoles. Sony took 45 days to sell 2 million. Sony will be fine just the way they areA $100 price drop is not going to save the PS3, especially since Microsoft can easily match. Sony needs to do something more drastic. Here is what I recommend:
1. Drop Blu-Ray as a requirement and sell a DVD/20GB version of the console @ $299 for Christmas.
2. Re-release all games that are worth re-releasing on DVD on a 'budget' line of games.
3. Promise to not release any games on Blu-Ray (so people feel safe buying the DVD PS3).
4. Buy or produce a exclusive (even timed) for Christmas '07 that will make the PS3 worth owning
5. Do all this without looking like they are in a panic.

[QUOTE="ghaleon0721"][QUOTE="campbell1874"]Dead wrong. Metal Gear Solid is a perfect example of why you are wrong. You are right, any 3rd party developer would be stupid to ignore the profit potential in the marketplace that Xbox 360 has created. That means, if it can be ported, it will be ported. Period. Sony does not pay for exclusives. It's been their policy since the beginning and it's worked for the last ten years. They are not going to change now, just five months into the PS3's life. Metal Gear Solid is a game that harnesses the unique features of the PS3 and takes advantage of the enormous blu-ray disc capacity. What that means, is that if you try to play it on your Xbox, it will overheat and burn your house down. Sony doesn't have to pay Konami anything for the exclusive. They have presented Konami with the ONLY option for bringing their progressive game developement ideas to life. That is why it's a Sony exclusive. It has nothing to do with loyalty, contracts, payments, or anything. It's simply a matter of which machine is the most capable. That is the PS3. The PS3 is still young, and so far, MGS is the only game I know of that is going to push it this far. Wait until its released and other developers start seeing what is possible with a superior machine like the PS3. you are right, but if Sony wana sell their console well enough at the beginning they should change that policy,as they will be the ones paying them off, come on!! be more implusive! Why would Sony pay for an exclusive that doesn't fully take adavantage of the power of its console? And SOny's console IS "selling well at the beginning". The PS3 is selling FASTER than the Xbox 360. People just don't realize that the whole reason that there are 10 million 360's out there is because it's been out for a year and a half.Unless Sony put their hand in their pockets and pay for an exclusive deal then they will loose ANY 3rd party game that wont make money if its sold only on the PS3. That includes MSG. Conpanies only make games to make money.
I think Sony should keep FF and MGS for any price as alot of people will be waiting to buy a PS3 just for FF or MGS.

[QUOTE="syscotech"]I still say that because of the high development cost with these next gen games, most if not all exclusives will go away in the next few years. It just makes sense. As these units get more expensive, people aren't going to buy one machine just because of a title. Exclusives are going the way of the dinosoaurs.... soon with PS3 and then eventually with XBOX. On the surface, you are right. There is no way that a developer can ignore the profit potential in either the Xbox or Playstation market. It only makes sense that games will start going multi-platform. If I were a developer, there would be no price that Sony could pay that would make me ignore 10 million Xbox gamers. It's just reality. So you would be completely right IF both systems were equal. But they are not. Sony's machine has about a billion times more horsepower than the 360. That means that as game developement technology advances (like it is with Metal Gear), then games will become exclusives simply because there is only one machine that can play them.Wow, check out this bombshell. Is the PS3 going to have any exclusives left??
