It is a good idea to use off the shelf hardware with existing APIs making it easier to develop for and cheaper to build. It is not nearly what a top end PC is, much less what it will be by the mid to end of the console generation. As well, 64 bit PCs are extremely common now, I disagree with 32 bit being the norm at this point, especially when talking about gamers. What he should say is it's like being given a solid and capable mid level gaming PC, with all the benefits of a console. There will always be the enthusiast PC niche, and there will always be the console niche. There is nothing wrong with either.
