@alaskancrab: Yep ... us hardcore-VR'ers who have been waiting for 25 years for (semi)affordable high-quality VR are not likely to be the "casual" audience this whole "room-scale VR" thing seems to be targeting. Also the launch titles for both platforms seem to mostly be glorified tech demos. I want to play a long AAA Adventure or RPG game in the comfort of my chair/couch thank you very much.
@bigrod69: I feel for you and the sickness... I'm one of the "lucky" ones I guess, I played ALL OF Quake II in the DK2 and could go for about 1-2 hours before needing a break... it depends on the game. An FPS where you jerk the view frequently will make you very sick, but thankfully there's a whole palette of genres to choose from. I'm looking forward mostly to adventure-type games (I kickstarted Obduction) where sickness should be minimized.
I also agree with the beginning of your statement... us hardcore-VR'ers who have been waiting for 25 years for (semi)affordable high-quality VR are not likely to be the "casual" audience this whole "room-scale VR" thing seems to be targeting. Also the launch titles for both platforms seem to mostly be glorified tech demos. I want to play a long AAA Adventure or RPG game in the comfort of my chair/couch thank you very much.
@Iemander: Or why doesn't the Vive support the Oculus SDK ? They are both probably trying to shape the industry. The OpenGL vs. DirectX war started 15 years ago and it hasn't ended...
Most reviews I've read say something along the lines of "you will look silly wearing this thing." The silly thing is suggesting there is any viable alternative to wearing some sort of head gear for VR. You are likely going to be playing alone in a room. Who cares what you look like? In fact, it looks pretty cool to me...
Says you can display on the TV AND the headset at the same time? That's what the separate box will help do then... it's a separate video card probably. The Oculus specifically recommends NOT mirroring because then the latency is tied to the slowest display.
