I learned about this in psych class (and neuro) a few years back but never really experienced it. During REM or dream state (or paradoxical sleep? sorry been a while), your body does put itself in a paralysis state while your breathing, heart rate and brain activities increase, and erm... certain body parts get excited. But this state of paralysis happens when you're sleeping.. what happened to you is another one of those fun things that science can't explain much. =)
Anyway, maybe after many failed attempts of trying to move... I would just pray. I'm not very religious but when these weird things happen to you, sometimes all you can do is pray.
Fun fact: You know that feeling of falling when you're sleeping and then you feel your whole body jerk and you wake up, it's called myclonic jerk. It's almost like the opposite of sleep paralysis. Alright, I apologize for posting a somewhat nerdy reply.
