1: Doom 2, just an amazing game. Even now it is very fun game to play. Simple, but very fun. Continuing the FPS revolution of Original Doom but improving on the original formula.
2: Half Life 1, Revolutionary gameplay in FPS at the time. Great story with interaction with other NPCs, great AI which many new games dont have. Half Life spawned massive modding community. Probably the largest amount of mods is on HL 1 engine.
3: GTA: Vicy City. I think its the best in the series but I havent played the GTA 4 episodes and original top down games. Takes the revolutionary gameplay of GTA 3 and improves on it. Its a great game which has a good story, good music, very fun gameplay. GTA overall has been a huge success. For me it is more memorable than GTA 3.
4: Deus Ex. I played the game for the first time in 2008 and was very impressed. The graphics might have aged but not the gameplay. Deus Ex has one of the best stories I have seen in a game. The gameplay is great. The player gets a choice on how to proceed on each level. Run and Gun, stealth or other. The game has atmosphere, music, interesting locations and characters.
5: Battlezone 1 and 2. Just have to mention both of them. Two great games, great mix of strategy, combat and simulation which I havent seen in any other games yet. Or at least which was done well. Battlezone 2 has great multiplayer. Sadly the single player AI is not that great... There are mods which make the game more challenging. For example the unofficial expansion pack.
I guess the games I have chosen are partially based on what effect they had on the game industry but I have finished Doom 2 so many times that I lost count. Half Life, finish the game multiple time and play many different mods. Thats why I say revolutionary gameplay...
Other mentions of great games are Duke Nukem 3D, Morrowind, Gothic 2, X-com UFO Unknown, Dark Reign,
Populous: The Beginning (nearly made it to my list of 5 best games), the game went under the radar but I think its still a great strategy game. Fun and unique gameplay. Sadly Bullfrog died. Hope Peter Molyneux will remember some of his older creations one day... Another game that didnt catch on was Sub Culture.
