I find it (SecuRom, etc) OK. I haven't had any problems with it myself. I can see why people would be frustrated though, if they happen to use all their installs for example and need to phone a tech support number to reset the install count. Whereas people who have a pirated version do not have any troubles at all.
They should definately remove the protection in the first year. What happens if I want to play my game in 5 years time and the authentication servers are no longer online?
There will always be a way to get around copy protection (both PC and consoles, so I dont see why its there in the first place. If people want to pirate the game they will find a way to do that. I mean look at Sins of a Solar Empire, that has no copy protection and is doing well.
The only way to stop piracy is to make buying the game easier than copying it. STEAM is an excellent example of this.
