I actually feel JRPG's more easy and linear than their american counterparts... I mean for me the strong point of this games is always the story and some of then have little complex things here and there (like the mentioned crafting) but in general they put you in the shoes of a character following an established path were you dont have control on much of the things happening...
Sales wise is not a success 'cause sony is still behind everyone else and is still losing a lot of money from it...
Games wise IMO is a success mainly because sony has invested a lot on exclusives and it has a ´pretty unique game library so far..
I think the world wasn't quite ready for a console with the price tag of the ps3 but the fact of the matter is that is a very well built machine with a minimal failure rate and an increasing library of excellent titles both multiplat and exclusive..
The first one I got was the N64 and I loved it badly.. but then the psone started toget a LOT of games (most of them bad indeed) so I finally gave up and got one ( I was a ninty fanboy bigtime back then) . IMO I would say that the 64 had the best games individually but the psone got the best library in general, way more options for gaming..
PS. I still got mi virtual boy.. man that console was not very well thought , I remember playin' it for like 10 minutes and need a break cause my eyes were burnin'!
