Hello System Wars. This may start off sounding like blog material, but it really does have to do with the War Between Systems so bear with me. I also know it’s kind of a long read so skip it if you like, but I think it may really interest people who are on the fence about getting a PS4, and may even convince some lemmings to switch sides. It’s also a pretty good story.
I’ll start by saying I haven’t posted on GS much because I’ve been in Tanzania for a few years doing some stuff, blah, blah, blah. I was actually inspired to go to Africa by a comment made by Subrosian on one of my old threads, in order to try and help mentally disabled children. Also, Tanzania is beautiful. Anyway, I’ve had access to the internet but not much time to use it, because I’ve been very busy with my work. I haven’t posted on GS lately, and I haven’t even lurked much. So you could say that I’ve completely missed out on the console wars.
Up until about a month ago I hadn’t so much as touched a current generation console. I hadn’t played a game in a while. My family wanted give me a nice gift when I returned home at long last, so they said they would buy me a console. I asked for an Xbone. I’ve never really been a huge Sony guy. Digimon World on PS1 is one of my favorite games. I liked Crash Bandicoot. That’s about it.
Anyway, as you’ve no doubt already surmised from the thread title, I was given a PS4 by accident. My sister didn’t know what she was doing and she just bought the wrong console. I mentioned it and she apologized and offered to return it but I said no. She hadn’t bought me any games, so after I set it up I went ahead and bought Bloodborne. I liked the Dark Souls games a lot. I had assumed Bloodborne would be on the Xbone as well, and, after I found out it was a PS4 exclusive, I was honestly pretty relieved that I’d gotten it by accident. It would have sucked missing out on Bloodborne. After that I bought Witcher 3, which is pretty good so far, and then MGSV, which kind of sucks, honestly (good gameplay, terrible story).
Overall, I was incredibly impressed with the PS4 and I couldn’t believe that Sony had made such an incredible product, nor that it had such a nice games line-up. Everything was going pretty well. That is, until the technical issues started.
It wasn’t a big deal at first. I noticed some lag here and there on games that had run smoothly. Whenever there was a lot of green foliage onscreen in Witcher 3 this kind of strange green filter would cover the screen. I thought it was my TV. I took it to a buddy’s house and tried it and it did the same thing on his TV. I looked up my problems online and I found some people having similar issues, but none exactly the same as mine, and none quite so severe. It got to the point that Phantom Pain was a slideshow and Witcher 3 moved so slowly it might as well have been a still painting. I figured I had a defective PS4, at that point.
So, I was a little pissed, but not too much. I dealt with the RROD last-gen so no big deal. At that point I figured I would ride it out, see if it improved, and began to explore the other entertainment options on the system. I tried out Netflix using the Browser App but that just wound up taking me to some other site that I couldn’t understand, with pornographic ads everywhere. I was pretty confused. I’m not an idiot, I’ve used online-capable consoles before, I just couldn’t understand why the hell I was getting redirects on a console browser (I didn’t know about the actual Netflix app since before I went to Africa I had never used it on a console).
So, I was just trying to fix it in the settings and I came across the themes and ended up downloading a whole bunch for more money that I should have hahaha. I got a Hunger Games one with Donald Sutherland on it, but then when I applied it the image of his face was all glitchy and distorted and it looked like his mouth was moving for some reason. This was kind of disturbing but also cool so I left it like that to mess with my friends and family. Over Thanksgiving, however, that led to some trouble
Apparently, the image of Donald Sutherland upset by brother’s gf because with his face really skinny like that he looked like her father who had physically abused her as a girl, so she was pretty upset by it. She asked me to turn it off, so I did, but later we wanted to watch a blu-ray so I had to turn it back on and that damn face was still frozen there and she started freaking out and asked my brother to take her home. So that was great. I turned the PS4 off and on probably a hundred times but it didn’t do anything. I called Sony support and they walked me through this dumb reset process that didn’t do anything except make it to where I could play games on half the screen while half of Donald Sutherland’s face took up the other side with his jaw glitching out and moving up and down the whole time.
It was funny at first, but after a while just pissed me off. At one point I tried going into settings to change the theme but because I couldn’t see what I was doing I opened the browser again and somehow opened a pornographic ad for cuckold porn and THAT glitched all over the screen with part of Donald Sutherland’s face like he was eating the couple on the bed while the husband used his flicker giant blue eyeball as a ritual mask hahaha. I tried turning off the PS4 but when I did the little speaker on the controller just made a noise like a computer makes when its beeping out a start-up code or whatever, and it just kept doing that, no matter what I did, but I didn’t want to unplug it because I thought I might mess it up worse. It was like I was held hostage to this machine and it was speaking to me in secret heavenly codes day and night lol.
I was exasperated and ready to take it in for repair or just smash the damn thing when I read a thread online saying that it might have to do with the HDMI cable. My TV is set up to where it’s really hard to plug and unplug cables, so I got my brother to help me hold up the TV while I messed with the cable. He held the TV while I tried to get the cable loose. The cable was stuck and I kept tugging at it but couldn’t get it loose. My brother started getting frustrated holding the TV up. Finally he was like “are you even pulling the cable” and I said “no, I’m pulling your leg.” Anyhow, the last few sentences of stories like this should always just be filler. That way you don’t scroll to the bottom of the post guess right away (of course you still might, but the odds are against it, like maybe 70-30 or so). Overall my experience has been negative, but that won’t stop me from trying Sony Products in the future. What can I say, they’ve really turned the corner. Here’s to more exclusives, and superior tech from Sony. If they could sort out some of their technical issues they would have a real powerhouse on their hands, as the game line-up, just based on the immense creativity of Sony's savant auteurs like Jonathan Blow is definitely superior. I feel like Sony is at a point of critical mass where if they push a little harder they can get to the point where they are no longer a joke (unlike...).
