They should take inspiration from the SNES imo. Meaning good graphics (even if not the best possible), good 3rd party support and a focus on "core" games. Good online is a must in these times too.

Nintendo have something, lets call it magic, that the others don't have. How else would they succeed hand over fist against superior graphics in a time where everyone is screaming for better pictures? A bellow-par online system in an age of world wide connections. And dwindling third party support while the others games numbers are growing.
Nintendo win with magic that's why people will buy and play their 'inferior' games while the other consoles try and work out how they are losing against a slingshot and a boomerang while they have air strikes and Assault Riffles.

Well to remind you: Nintendo was actually surpassed by Sega for a short time in the early 90s. It was Donkey Kong Country, a graphically impressive game made by Rare, that changed the tides and turned the SNES into the 16-bit gen winner.
And they shot themselves in the foot when they decided to keep going with cartridges on the N64. N64 was almost three times stronger than the PlayStation but it was severely gimped because of the limited cartridge space. They lost much 3rd party support because of it although the console was a lot more advanced.
GameCube was a strange story (I think the loss of Rare was the main reason why it failed so bad) but the Wii sold because of the Wiimote and because of it's image rather than because of the games themselves.
The new console will have to be a lot more than simply an upgraded Wii if they want it to succeed.
I agree a bit. I definitely agree that the next Nintendo needs to do more than just ship out a Wii with HD and slightly more power than what it already has. I found an article about this if you wanna check out the link in my blog
The Nintendo 64 sticking to cartridges did limit games overall storage (slightly remedied by the expansion pack) but still managed to produce extensive games like LoZ OoT. The Playstation was also the first majorly pirated console because of its move to discs. Sure plenty of Playstations were sold but most people I knew that had one had like 300 games, none of them paid for.
The Gamecube was where Nintendo really opened the door for Microsoft and Sony but it still had good games of its own.
Surely no one here will debate that Nintendo isn't the most successful console company to date. In the end the longer the 3 companies are competing with each other the better our games and consoles will be regardless of what brand you rest your hat on.
Also, what is Rare doing now?
