SDF Review

After many months of anticipation I finally got my copy of Bioshock and played through it over the past few days. There are many things to like about Bioshock such as the graphics (not animation), parts of the story and the water effects. That's about where the good stuff ends.

First let me say how excited I was for the game after playing the demo on the 360. While the animation seemed stiff and you could tell the 360 was being pushed too hard it still looked like I had a lot of potential. So imagine my disappointment when I got the final version only to find none of the animation hitches, shooting glitches and AI was cleaned up. I also wonder how much better the graphics would've been had they not been compressed to fit on a DVD. Now I do not fault the developers for this, they only had so much system power to work with so maybe this will all be addressed with the PS3 version when it comes out.

To conclude, let this game cook in the oven just a little bit longer and wait for the superior PS3 version. Cleaned up textures, animations, AI, extra weapons, Home space, standard HDD and Blu Ray will make this flawed game into a perfect gem.

I forgot how pretty Dirt really is. I'm second guessing my need for it. Perhaps I DO need this after Forza runs dry on me. EDIT: I was under the impression the PS3 version was the lead platform for this... Or at least the engine was written with the PS3 in mind. Am I wrong?musicalmac

I heard carmark said ps3 system account too many memory, so memory usage is less than xb360. that's why sometime devs have to cush something down

quote:

Game Informer: When we interviewed you at CES this year, and QuakeCon two years ago you weren't too thrilled with developing for multicore systems. Obviously now, that's the case across all platforms. Were you kind of at the point with id Tech 5 where, you said, "We give in?"

John Carmack: You have to take advantage of what's on the table. Although it's interesting that almost all of the PS3 launch titles hardly used any Cells at all. We hired one of the best PS3 guys around who did the Edge Acceleration technology for Sony - he's on our team now so we've got some of the best PS3 experience here. In fact when we were doing all of the tech demos, we'd bring in the developers and they'd walk over and say, "it's running on the PS3!" (laughs) They'd sit there and stare at it for a while.

There's no doubt that with all of the platforms that we have running here PS3 is the most challenging to develop on. That's what I've been saying from the beginning. It's not that it was a boneheaded decision because they're a lot closer the fact that they can run like this [points to the 4 different gaming stations running Rage] - they're a lot closer than they've ever been before. It's a hell of a lot better than PS2 versus Xbox. But given the choice, we'd rather develop on the Xbox 360. The PS3 still does have in theory more power that could be extracted but it's not smart. We don't feel it's smart to head down that rat hole. In fact, the biggest thing we worry about right now is memory. Microsoft extracts 32 megs for their system stuff and Sony takes 96. That's a big deal because the PS3 is already partitioned memory where the 360 is 512 megs of unified and on the PS3 is 256 of video, 256 of memory minus 96 for their system...stuff. Stuff is not the first thing that came to my mind there. (laughs)

The PS3 is not the favorite platform but it's going to run the game just as good. To some degree there's going to be some lowest common denominator effect because we're going to be testing these every day on all of the platforms, and it's going to be "Dammit it's out of memory on the PS3 again, go crunch some things down" That's probably going to be the sore spot for all of this but because we're continuous builds on all of these we're going to be fighting these battles as we go rather than build these things out and go, "Oh my God we're so far away from running on there." Which is the situation where Enemy Territory is suffering with at a degree right now, and a lot of other people have that.

Yup. That's very similar to Kameo's water. I don't understand why you're getting angry though. Everyone knows Kameo had some great water effects. Just because Uncharted's water effects look similar to Kameo's doesn't mean it's a bad thing.

MADVLAD123

I'm not angry, I'm just annoyed that you keep saying they look similar. They are not! How about you post pic of kameo's water? (no offscreen shots, justpics or video capture on your computer)

I'm not going to go turn my 360 on and play Kameo and take pictures, and blah blah blah. So I'll just post some videosI found on the youtube. Don't expect great quality:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUge9wsmRhM&mode=related&search

(The video shows clips from the game. Includes some clips that has the character walking through water)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1LWY3wm42o&mode=related&search

(This one has a whole part at the beginning with water)

And this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQ9Z263tr44&mode=related&search

(She walks through a pond in a forest)

And here's another idea: Just play the game. I understand you REALLY like Uncharted and don't want its reputation to be ruined or whater. But it's a good thing that Uncharted's water looks like Kameo's. Kameo's water looked amazing.

sure, kameo water looks as great as uncharted.

specially the ripple effects.

[QUOTE="EwokAssassin"]The Uk is an island that's very small in comparison to the rest of Europe. The PS3 is still kicking butt in Europe. Click hereLilac_Benjie

but UK is the largest market in euro. accound for about 1/4 to 1/3.

I'd like to see a link that states that. The PS3 did break every record in France.

It just is. The UK has one of the largest economies in the world.

edit: Actually the largest economy in Europe is Germany.

yes, but uk is the largest console market in euro compare to germany.

the dev already clear this matter

http://charlieoscardelta.com/board/viewtopic.php?t=17360&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=75

lol i just realized after i posted that 3 dev's already said that those are 2 different versions of the maps in the pix and that both systems will look identical...i can't believe this thread is still alive

-----

During development we frequently tweak the color balances in the levels to achieve the look and feel that we're shooting for. What you're seeing in these two videos are two completely different visual **** for the level that were tried. That's why the older 360 shot has a distinct blueish tint, while the more recent PS3 shot shows the more appropriate middle eastern feeling lighting.

You can also some differences in the geometry in the two shots. Broken walls, windows, etc... Every level goes through at least one "detail pass". The designers will rough in geometry and do a certain level of detail, but it's the environment artists that really make each level shine. The version of the level shown in the PS3 shot has been through one or two more detail passes than the one shown in the 360 shot. That said, all levels (single player and multi) use identical geometry and textures across all platforms. If nothing else, the shots show an interesting look at the evolution of a level.

[QUOTE="ParkCarsHere"]True, but the cost they went to get those effects? An entire team of programmers? Wow. The rest of the game better be as awesome as the water... lol.project343

*looks at reviews*

GameInformer : 10
GamesRadar: 10
OXM : 10
OXM UK : 10
Alternative Press Magazine : 10
EuroGamer : 10
Gamer.Tv : 5/5
PC Gamer UK : 95%
PC Zone : 96 %

:P

wow, gameinformer rarely gave a game 10 score

they only gave 3 games 10 in whole history.

Zelda TP

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

Metroid Fusion

soI guess bioshock must receive 9.5+ in gamespot.
