The secret to any art form is being able to take criticism. You make something you put it out and the world reacts, to expect only praise and to try to get audiences to see things through your point of view is loser talk.
You make something good people will praise, you make something bad people won't praise you.
A creative person who expects only praises is a shallow one. Defending Lucas for his bad films make this guy sound even more shallow. Can't deal with critique go become a garbage collector or something.
Or even better don't read your criticisms, like Terrence Malick who never reads any of his critiques or even bothers doing any interviews.

Bottom line, if they wanted the highest grossing film of all time record, they needed a cookie cutter romance regardless if it compromises the films integrity. If they don't care for the highest grossing record and are content with making a great film for nerds, then they succeeded in spades.
I'm not saying the Twilight, Insurgent or Hunger Games are good films, but they do draw a huge female audience, which is what's lacking in Star Wars.

That's why Avatar and Titanic have the highest records, cause they are made for general audiences not just nerds.
When your goal is to make the highest grossing film of all time, you shouldn't hire a nerd, cause nerds aren't romantic and they can't draw a large female audience and a healthy female to male ratio is what pushes record breaking numbers.
@dfirehawkc: Yeah, but still considering Avatar only did 200 million in China, I can't see this film doing any more than 500 million, China might be full of dudes, but the dudes are all trying to woo girls, so they are gonna go where they are mostly likely able to find the ladies.
It'll probably do better than Avatar in China, but its not gonna be enough to put this film over the top, mainly due to the international box office being so low.
@andfx8: Well a strong female presence doesn't mean no love arc. You can be a strong chick, but even strong chicks fall in love. They don't just fight people and then become lesbians.
Even the chick in Avatar was a strong chick, but she still fell in love with the dude, that's what most women wanna see. Hell even Rose from Titanic was a strong chick.
I get that Disney is trying to play the whole female light saber wielding Jedi thing, but even female Jedis fall in love.
There's a crucial piece missing in this Star Wars and I think the box office will eventually reflect that. And its a really tough puzzle to solve since J J Abrams already cast two very ugly dudes as the male leads in the film, both the Sith guy and the Storm Trooper black guy are close to being butt ugly I don't know which one is uglier but none of them make girls swoon.
So even if they plot an eventual love arc, its gonna be very hard to get any girls to wanna see those two guys woo the female lead.
They kinda dug themselves a hole, where there's really little room for making it romantic and really little room for female audiences to take to the franchise.
Generally speaking young female audiences envision themselves in the female lead role, and envision the love triangle of the female lead to their own love life, so having a good looking guy to drive that arc is crucial. Its kind of the basis for most of these female driven sci-fi films nowadays. Twilight, Insurgent, Hunger Games, all follow the same rule, strong female lead, followed by good looking male leads in love arcs followed by tons of CGI and explosions for the male audience.
@andfx8: Does help a little, but there is no love arc. I watched the movie with my GF, and she was bored stiff.
In Avatar you had a good looking male lead falling in love with an Alien chick, and he fights for her.
In Titantic you have the prettiest man on Earth falling in love with Rose and he fights for her.
Both films played well to the feminine wiles, while still giving men enough explosions and CGI to get them excited. Star Wars on the other hand has tons of CGI, tons of explosions, but there is no good looking male lead who falls in love with the heroine and there is no grand romance that women want.
In the end Star Wars is a film filled with ugly men fighting more ugly men, which works for guys but doesn't work for the ladies.
To a certain extent Lucas had it right when he hired pretty boy Hayden and Natalie, too bad he was such a bad filmmaker. Sadly J. J Abrams is a nerd through and through and doesn't have a romantic bone in his body, so we end up with a nerds wet dream of a Star Wars. If they had handed this film to a different filmmaker you may have seen a better film, one that may have played well to both sexes.
@davillain-: I don't think it will. Its international box office is only 580 million and its domestic is only 570 million.
Avatar had 760 million domestic alone, and over 2 billion international. With China only making up 200 million of that.
So unless you think China is gonna hit 1 billion on its own, its not gonna come close to Avatar.
I think China will top out at 500 million, which still puts it way below Avatar. The problem with this film is its not romantic, like Avatar and Titanic, which limits its audience to mostly men, and there are only so many men on this planet.
You want a film to break all records, you need to make a film that both men and women like, basically a film with tons of CGI and Effects, plus a romantic love arc about a guy and a girl, essentially Avatar or Titanic.
Star Wars only has half of what it takes to be a true record breaker, its a shame, cause they really had a chance to create a love arc with the black guy, the girl and Harrison Ford's son, but they opted to make everyone sexually androgenise.
Can't see this beating Avatar or Titanic, since this film doesn't have that romantic arc that drives women to see films. None of the girls I know have any interest to see this movie in theatres.
@jshah500: How do you know there is no document? They can have a check list with signatures and a surveillance camera aimed at the locker storage for all you know.
Stores can open their product before sales, that's where you are wrong. Retail can open product for inspection on a daily basis, get your facts straight.
The investigation would serve as a loss leader to stop future crime, it sets a president and stops further fraud, so of course they could do it just to make an example out of you.
Very possible to be caught, a store may wanna make a example out of you cause they don't like your face. Its a only a win win when there is cute little kid involved and a nice little American Eagle style family that looks good a the news.
You pull the same shit in a hoody and some gold teeth and you see them make an example out of you faster than you know what.
Like I said petty crime is for fools, you wanna do fraud the go big or go home.
Also hard for me to see any atomic family able to pull this off, risking it. The dad risks his day job if things go wrong. I can only see ghetto poor people doing this and they are the least likely to actually succeed.
