@Emerald_Scott Tess was the one who truly believed Ellie could save human kind, she was the one who seemed to give a shit about Ellie and showed her feelings. The entire time Tess was around, Joel was just a big ol' bag of shit to Ellie. And after you can tell she is upset with it; both because she liked Tess and because she felt it was her fault that she died.
I just felt it hit them both hard, but really struck a chord with Ellie.
Not everyone is going to see it the same way, however the way you explained it is half the reason. Tess dying gave Ellie a loss, and brought her closer to Joel.
Maybe it's just me, but I saw the game from Ellie's perspective for most of it. She was the main character in my eyes, with Joel being second.
