@TheGreatPhoenix @kingJord Actually if you go back and read the review, they claimed that because Riot had sold a "Premium pack" (or whatever it was called) they considered it to be a full game, but LoL was still in beta, so they gave it a 6. It was a terrible review. Go read it if you don't believe me...
5.0 ... That's a bit harsh. Kind of like when you get LoL 6.0, because of launch issues, and it went on to be one of the most popular PC games (and the best example of "freemium") of all time.
The game was arguably released a month or two before it should have been, but this review is just way too negative. When the game does work, and no bug is getting in your way, the game is awesome.
@green_scorpion @kingJord Nope. I was angry as anyone last night when I got home from work and finally put my baby to sleep and had a spare hour and the game was down ... but then when the baby woke me up in the middle of the night (when normal people were sleeping) the game worked perfectly :)
@Poodlejumper It doesn't matter what you think! (jk!). The truth is the game itself is awesome... Just waiting for these issues to get solved and we'll be building incredibly detailed cities!
I managed to play last night at 3am for an hour... I'm up to 7 hours total played. The game is FANTASTIC and I will be patient and in a week this will be a distant memory.
@lucutisborg @kingJord It's VERY different to games from the 80s and early 90s that you listed... It is based on a very detailed simulation engine, whereas the old Sim games, great as they were, have always been based on somewhat simple mathematical and statistical algorithms. You can find the source code for the original SimCity and if you can read C you can see exactly what I mean.
As for the genre - the term "RTS" has a cultural meaning that doesn't include every game that involves some strategy and plays out in real time (rather than in turns). By those standards, any action RPG like Skyrim is also an "RTS" because it involves strategy and plays out in real time... RTS is a term used for combat games. I didn't make this up...
@pathosfire Doubtful. Some processing is offloaded to servers (or so they claim) to run certain elements of the simulation. If they engineered it well, it will never be cracked because it's not just DRM for the sake of DRM - it's "added value" (in quotes because it's questionable).
