I don't think it looks nearly as bas as you're describing, but I'm not floored by it's graphics either. The texture quality isn't very high, especially up close but it's not horrible either. That being said, it still looks good and it has a good amount of time to get polished up, which I'm sure it will. Besides the textures, it does look pretty good and I'm sure it will only get better before release.
Regardless, MGS will not flop in any conceivable way. For it to "flop", it's review scores would have to be awful, and it would have to sell poorly, neither of which will happen. The game should score very well and it will be a mega seller for the PS3, not because of graphics but because it's a quality title with a humongous fan base.
As for you saying Konami delayed MGS because it saw how good CoD4 is and it coudn't compete, I'm sorry, but I think that's ludicrous. MGS could come out at any time and be a monster selling title no matter what other games were on the market at the time. MGS was delayed, not because it's scared of CoD, but to allow for sufficient polish time, as well as to allow the PS3 installed base to grow so they can sell more, thus recoup more development cost and make profit. I'm sure there are other reasons, but I can confidently say it has nothing to do with CoD4.
Have faith in Konami and Kojima and they will surely reward the faith you put in them.;)
