@phoenix1289: They do make a fair point though, if they introduced a new character who was gay, it would be hard for people to see it as just an aspect of the character the way they could with Sulu.

Probably would've been best to just do what Takei wanted, though, so at least he would be on their side.

@Smosh150: In other articles, he mentions that Roddenberry specifically didn't think Sulu would be gay, and that's a big part of his reasoning.

@unzythun: There doesn't need to be a reason, just like there doesn't need to be a reason for people to be straight.

Regardless, as the article states, the original actor to play the character is a prominent campaigner for gay rights, so this is a way to honor him.

@packerfan7575: Actually, Roddenberry always wanted Star Trek to push progressive agendas. There was an episode where Riker kissed an androgynous alien. The alien was supposed to be played by a male, but they wimped out and had a female play the alien instead.
