do you even understand what you're saying? i never said microsoft OWNED a codec, i said they developed one and earn royalties on it (truth). your post even reveals microroft is one of those companies, you either didn't read the whole list or ignored that.

It's called "context," buddy. This thread is about Sony having to pay M$ for codecs, which is clearly not the case. The point of a patent pool such as BDA or MPEG LA is to allow these companies who each own various patents used in something such as DVD or Blu-ray to create a streamlined licensing format so that you don't have to go around getting licenses for the hundreds if not thousands of individual patents that go into these things. Sony definitely does not pay a royalty to M$ of any kind for the use of VC-1, because Sony is also a licensor of VC-1, which gives Sony the right to use VC-1 without approval from MPEG LA.

[QUOTE="shoeman12"]microsoft developed a codec for blu-ray and earns royalty on every blu ray disc.-Snooze-

Nope, just like Sony doesn't own blu-ray, M$ doesn't own the codecs that work with blu-ray. Like the BDA, those codecs are licensed through an agency where Sony, surprise, is a member as well.

The VC1 is developed and owned by MS.

Wrong again. It's licensed by MPEG LA whose members consist of companies such as M$ and Sony. Sony is on the list of licensors for VC-1, which means M$ can't stop Sony from using VC-1. Sony doesn't even have to apply for a license as a licensor of VC-1.

If you say so, Mr. "I know the business plans and strategies of the board members of the BDA."

Buying a 360 when you have a PC is overkill.

Not at all. It has everything to do with your comment.

Well, you're wrong if you think Sony would be intimidated by a potential backlash for voting no on a license application by M$ for blu-ray. I'm not saying Sony would vote one way or the other on such a license, but to suggest that Sony's vote would be decided by fear of a backlash is pretty ridiculous.

uh, I never said that they would or would not turn MS down, and Sony votes the way that it wants. The other board members can't do anything about it except to vote against Sony's vote if they don't agree with it.

The board members of BDA vote on each license application. Sony has a seat on the board, but they get one vote like everyone else on the board.

And it's not as simple as taking patented technology and changing the color of the laser to get around licensing requirements. That's patent infringement.
