Why not?

I mean,  people say that with a firmware upgrade the PS3 will...

A. Decode DTS-HD Master Audio

B. Enable 1080p24 output

C. 1080p DVD Upscaling

Firmware updates are like magic...Havn't ya heard..
THIS NEWS IS WRONGLY TRANSLATED
THIS NEWS IS WRONGLY TRANSLATED
THIS NEWS IS WRONGLY TRANSLATED

The news says Blu-Ray H(igh) D(efinition) DVD players but not HD-DVD players

Go ask someone who knows Chinese and read the source.

which is here
http://www.ettoday.com/2007/04/16/320-2082635.htm
No it doesn't.    It says "Blue Light HD-DVD",  they say "Blue Light HD-DVD" because China has EVD "Enhanced Versatile Disk" which uses a red laser (like dvd)

By the way,  read the actual quotes (Translated)

Deng Hungchi also mentioned that Blue HD-DVD for high-volume, high-quality images, high resolution vision, machine Images can be more realistic, more beautiful images. Its advantage is more easily with existing DVD discs maintain compatibility, and may continue to use existing DVD production equipment CDs and facilitate the expansion of the distance between lens and do not need, such as CD-ROM cartridges, substantially reduced from the current transition to HD DVD, the cost for the DVD, makes disc manufacturers switch from DVD to HD DVD when the costs can be reduced to a minimum. Moreover, the HD DVD recording capacity is smaller, but the eye, decontamination capability, and without cartridges, dish Therefore the production process easier and less costly.

Now which format has the smaller capacity?  Which format is cheaper to manufacture?  Which production plant can simply be upgraded from DVD to HD-DVD?

Im not acually concerned in the slightest about this - $199 for a stand-alone HD-DVD going on sale march next year ...

March next year -- i think you'll find Blu-ray will be priced competivly then ... expect PS3 to no longer be the cheapest BD player ... Also expect Universal to be netural by then ...

choasgod

March next year?  WTF are you talking about?  The whole March thing has something to do with stock trading

You really, believe that crap? For crying out loud its Ign.com The 360 Fanboy site Dee Dee Dee!! I do admit that Blu-Ray is expensive and they should lower the prices down for it.Ackad

IGN is not the source.  They are just repeating what article after article has already stated.

Chinese HD-DVD players are coming,  it was even announced at CES 2007

This is a waste of Wal-Mart's time and money. The HD-DVD players are already cheaper then blu-ray players but blu-ray is winning. Plus those HD-DVD players will probably be made so cheap that they'll break constantly (maybe even worse than a X360)RahKayne

Latest online numbers show that HD-DVD sales have spiked above BluRay again... They say its due to the fact that lots of PS3 owners bought a BluRay movie to try out on their the new PS3 and the sales have dropped off a bit.

actually that's because hddvd owners gathered together and brought hddvd's at once to make a spike.

oh yeah?

i provided a link of an example

or you could do a google search to find out more

Even if that accusation is true (the link is a theory based on a forum).. sales are sales.

that's why I said an example, I'm not gonna spend the time to "prove it in court", but I just provided and example and/or possibly the reason why you heard of hddvd doing better than BD. Where did you get your info from?

BTW people don't buy PS3's for BD player, however if you buy a PS3 you get a bd player and I'm sure that does help out in urging the customer to buy a bd movie

Agreed,  even fools without HDTV's

I believe it is still in Blu-ray's favor 9:2

http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/9316.cfm

Where are you getting your info?

9:2?  WTF?  Why are people still using those numbers?!  The 9:2 ratio was for one freaking week!  One week!  And that 1 week was over a month ago!

God damn people..

I wonder why they didnt add hdmi 1.3 support? xbox360 soundchip doesnt support it? hdmi improves like color pallette and adds stuff like uncompressed sound.hytrytrytrytryt

Why are yoiu opposed to HDMI 1.2 ?

if mean dude, if you are gonna put hdmi in a console, like ms did why didnt you just put latest and greatest hdmi version?

kinda dumb adding hdmi 1.2 and ps3 has hdmi 1.3 this will automatically makes consumers/buyers ps3 is way better because it's a higher number sounds better lol.

What does HDMI 1.3 do that HDMI 1.2 can't?

Amir Majidimehr, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft's Mobile and Embedded Devices Division has revealed that the recently announced Xbox 360 Elite console will not be HDMI 1.3 compliant, unlike Sony's PlayStation 3. Instead the X360 Elite will be complaint with the HDMI 1.2 specification.

This will mean that Xbox 360 Elite owners will miss out on lossless multi-channel HD DVD audio formats like Dolby Digital Plus and TrueHD if they're using the HD DVD add-on drive. Instead, lossless audio tracks will be down mixed in the same way that they already are on the Core and Premium versions of Xbox 360.

Majidimehr admitted that if you want to experience lossless audio formats in HD DVD movies, you're going to have to look elsewhere. "If you are keen on having 5.1 PCM output, I recommend purchasing the Toshiba A2 player which after the price drop, will be much cheaper than Elite."

However, he did say that the X360 Elite's HDMI port will support 2-channel PCM audio. "Our goal was to provide a digital connection for video which people wanted for some of their TVs. And of course, single cable A/V connection. So if having analog video bothered you before, you can now use digital. If you lacked component/VGA on your TV, you are in business with Xbox 360 Elite."

He also revealed that you won't be able to select the output video format yourself with the console connected via HDMI. This is because the connection relies on a handshake with your TV in order to select what it deems the appropriate RGB/YUV settings

http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2007/04/02/xbox_360_elite_is_not_hdmi_1.3_compliant/

HDMI 1.3 does not add lossless audio...

The Toshiba A1, XA1, A2, and A20 HD-DVD players are all HDMI 1.2, and they are all capable of lossless audio.

Not having HDMI 1.3 is not the reason the 360 doesn't output lossless audio.
