It might be a resolution adjustment. I get this really awkward "RIPPPP!" sound and a flickering of the screen each time I load into a game. My TV also displays a brief "No Signal" warning right before this occurs. I think it's because I have my system set to 1080i when most of the demos and games are slated to run at 1080p or 720p. I've heard from others that 720p is probably the optimal setting to have my system on so I plan on switching it tonight and seeing if the annoying "RIPPPPP!" and screen flickering (lots of different colors occur with the flickering. Usually there's a pink or green flicker) disappears. To be fair, once the game starts, there's absolutely no problems at all. I'd gladly take some resolution adjustment/flickering at the start of games then to have to hold my breath and pray that the console holds up during gameplay (you know, like some owners of some other systems have to do ;))

Happened to me but the solution is to turn off your internet. Just go to system settings or something like that and turn internet to disabled. It's skipping because the system is trying to reconnect to the net and no connection is available. Doesn't happen to people whose PS3s always stay connected. CyanX73
Do you have the newest firmware? With the newest firmware, it seems like the PS3 automatically disables the Internet connection for me. No background downloads allowed. And when I quit, the movie, then there's a reconnection and I see the "Signed In" message in the upper right hand corner. Ever since then, I've had no problems with DVD skips even with my wifi turned on.

For now, yes. But who knows what developers can add. It's possible BluRay is the reason Kojima is keeping MGS4 solely on the PS3. I'd rather have the option of more immersive environments than be stuck with old technology for the sake of easy access to multiplats.

Can't say I've experienced the same issues. Casino Royale and The Departed both looked brilliant on BluRay.

I've endured three freezes. Freeze #1 was when I foolishly attempted to dupe 110 lockpicks in Oblivion. That's a fairly obvious crash waiting to happen. Freeze #2 occurred when Umbra was beating me down in Oblivion. That one I can't explain. If it's any consolation, it has happened to more than one user and can be easily remedied by not taking her on head to head and finding some (probably sinister) way of ending her life. Finally, Freeze #3 occurred when I was watching BluRay movies. I had a weak wifi connection and I was told that losing connection to the router and then reconnecting and resigning into PSN causes the crash. There was a temporary fix of completely disabling all internet connectivity when watching movies (through the network menu) but now it appears Sony has done it for us via a firmware update. If you watch a Bluray disc with your Internet turned on and exit, you'll notice the first thing it says in the XMB is that you've just signed in which leads me to think that during the playback of your movie, the Internet was off. Sure enough, Internet options like background downloading are disabled when playing back movies. Overall though, no other crashes or significant hardware flaws. I definitely appreciate the reliability of this console compared to ... well ... some other more unfortunate competitors. :P

How much is it? $600 Why is it better? You said it already. BluRay appears to be the next gen format of movies and (possibly) games. Watching a BluRay version of Casino Royale or The Departed on your brand new Samsung LCD should be more than enough to reassure him that the purchase was worth it ;) (I'm assuming he won't want to hear arguments like "But I need it to play FF13!") If he's asking for why you should spend $600 on a PS3 instead of the other cheaper consoles out there, well, you probably want to bring that over to System Wars to avoid getting the thread shut down!

Looks pretty cool and if it's appropriately priced (I highly doubt it), I'd give it a shot. But otherwise, I prefer the same old gaming controller to this new age motion sensing stuff. I was rather irritated when Marvel Ultimate Alliance forced me into using the Sixaxis for some of the missions. All I want is to sink back into my couch and get some gaming in. Not get up and have to furiously shake my controller up and down! ;)

[QUOTE="CaptainCrazy"]Who uses those card slots? I don't think many will. Who needs 60GB space when there is barely anything to download anyway and wi-fi is also unecessary for most people. SikKwuN

ive used those slots a bunch of times :-D

I too have used those card slots a couple of times to show off photo albums. I don't believe the PS3 supports streaming off computers so those slots are a very convenient option. (As opposed to loading those shots onto my PC, transferring them back down to a USB thumb drive, and then displaying the photos) The wi-fi argument is also a bit weak. I myself don't use wifi that much as my signal is weak but I imagine there are plenty of PS3 owners out there who like the flexibility of moving it wherever they want without worrying about routing a cable through so many rooms of their homes. Finally, I initially though 60GB was overkill myself. Fast forward a couple of weeks of madly downloading anything on the PlayStation store and many, many, many gamesaves of Oblivion and well, I find myself down to my last 10 GB of space! In my case, the decision to purchase the 60GB model was the correct one!

I doubt it will make it's way over to the PS3 as Microsoft has a hand in its production. That being said, I feel it's a good game but one that I don't see myself playing for too long. Like the previous poster noted, the single player campaign is over fairly quickly. While I would enjoy co-op play, I don't see myself spending enough time to be a competitive player in the multiplayer modes. And I think one of the biggest draws of the game is its multiplayer options. So in a way, I don't find myself desperately lusting over it. Although it would be a nice break from the Oblivion marathon I'm currently going through. :P

I just spent an hour taliking in system wars with 360 fans about something that wasn't even an argument to start off with. Where were the sony fans? If you want to look into it, it is under games for 360 in system wars.ravine1
Just taking a look at some of the threads there makes me queasy. I would never go in and post. It's bound to lead to a flamewar. I wouldn't phrase it as roughly as crck did, but I would agree that a lot of the bashing that goes on in there stems from jealousy. (Whether they are zitpopping dorks that cannot afford the PS3 or not is up for debate :P) Might as well hang out here in the calm, serene, supportive board that is the PS3 board. :)
