I don't know why nearly everyone is calling this card a failure. It isn't. Just because it doesn't meet and/or exceed expectations doesn't really classify it as a failure. Small steps need to be taken before huge improvements can be made. A single card is being put up against SLI setups, and the 9800gx2 (which is also 2 cards) and showing itself to be not far behind. As far as I see the card itself is a step forward, not backward. There is no other single card that will give you more performance than this one at the moment.
The price may be high for the performance it gives in comparison to more inexpensive setups, but the price will definitely drop sooner or later, giving the card a better value. Besides, no one is forcing anyone to buy it.
[QUOTE="muirplayer"]Had a similar experience with getting underaverage scores. Hit just over 11k with my old 8800gts 640mb overclocked. 12,7XX with my 9800gx2. Not much of an increase there to say the least. Overclocking the gx2 brought little to no results. However, an overclock for my processor (very small) got me closer to 14k.GTR2addict
ur cpu is killin ya, get urslef a phenom 9850 BE will ya?
Haven't checked the CPU support list for my board. I'm on a 590 SLI set so my chances are slim even if it is listed. Don't want to spend money just for a higher 3dm score anyhow =].

Not all cards are going to be great overclockers, which is what you're experiencing. There should be other options open to you but I'm not sure. I'm not familiar with 8800gt cards. The core may probably need more voltage, which either requires a physical voltage mod or flash it with a new bios that has a higher default vcore setting.
Oh yea. Just because you're getting artifacts with ATI tool doesn't mean you'll see any in game. However if ATI tool makes you feel comfortable, then so be it.
So does the processor really hold back the GPUs that much? I thought they could stand on their own to an extent.sonicsurfer
In my experience the cpu is a bottleneck for enthusiast videocards. I haven't tried 3dm06 in a while but from what I remember, I received a much higher score increase from overclocking my processor by 80mhz rather than overclocking my videocard. I never ran 3dm06 at that speed though. I stopped testing though because I couldn't achieve a stable overclock. My FSB doesn't like going over 205mhz.
His problem has nothing to do with an FPS cap, apparently. 25fps cap, really?
First, your rig isn't super fast. It's good, don't get me wrong, just not super. I know the game is quite old, but you are running it at a large resolution with maxed settings. I'm not even sure Doom 3 is even threaded for a dual core processor so.. the quad won't help any. It's possible that something could be taking up processor cycles outside of the game, but I wouldn't know.
Actually, it isn't overclocked. It's a shrunken die (55nm, as compared to 65nm). Die shrinks will boast a higher default clock speed. The only reason it's keeping the 9800gtx name is because nVidia wants to keep their 9 series on top. They did the same with the 8 series gts cards, g80 and g92.
