@asnakeneverdies: I usually like to be a little more nuanced in my opinions, but in this case I agree; it's just a terrible unintelligible list. Why're you analysing the games like a Parisian robot? Can't you just enjoy something for what it is?
@KahnArtizt: Yeah I admit it doesn't translate nicely to controllers with a diamond-shaped ABXY face button configuration, which unfortunately is almost every controller ever made.
Not because of the tank controls; I've no problem with those. But because of the A,X (X,Square) buttons for shoot and run, awkwardly fighting for dominance of your thumb. A USB GameCube-style controller is the way to go for this game. (I've come to think the GameCube design is so superior, that I even use it as my primary Devil May Cry controller)
“Gaming is like masturbation. Everybody does it, nobody wants to talk about it.”
Really? I'd love it if I had someone to talk to about the games I play. I only play offline games these days. My wife pretends to be interested sometimes, but unless it's really narrative-heavy, I know she's just humoring me. I'm playing through Call of Cthulhu (2018) at the moment though, and she really likes to watch.
@vamonosraza: It's just nonsense to say RE4 isn't good. If someone wants to say it's not the best, then alright.
But you'll notice how the tiny minority of people who say it's bad, can never properly say why.
The graphics were best-in-class at the time. Just staggeringly good for 2005. The gameplay was revolutionary. Pioneered over-the-shoulder as we know it. Fantastic feel for every weapon, which were all varied and unique. Enemies were the most terrifying and relentless at the time. And not in a jump-scare way like Doom 3 the previous year, and extremely varied, same for the bosses. Every shot anywhere on a humanoid body gave you a different reaction and contextual action. Extremely tight with sky-high skill ceiling. The best players can complete the game without even firing a shot. It handles escorting NPCs better than any other game I can think of. The inventory management wasn't just not-a-chore, but actually fun. I would actually enjoy arranging my case. With NewGame+ and the weapon upgrades, plus Mercenaries, Separate Ways, Assignment Ada, unlockable difficulties, the replayability was near endless. Not to mention the campaign is really long. It's still held up today as possibly the best-paced game ever made. People don't really think about pacing, but RE4's is legendary. Just look at the YouTube videos made on that specific topic alone. Impeccable atmosphere. The cultists chanting in ghoulish Spanish as they close in around you will give you chills 50 years later, never mind 20, and most enemies are similarly memorable. Great atmospheric tracks and appropriate use of silence. The voice acting is flawless in a charmingly cheesy way. The level design is amazing. No matter how goofy the situations you found yourself in, they always felt like real places, and with countless secrets to find. And the environments are as varied as the enemies, never the same thing twice. From the farm to the castle to the military base, constantly fresh. The story is the weakest aspect of the game. While not exactly Game of Thrones or anything, if you just need an excuse for the action, it'll provide a lot more than that. As good as any in the series. And again, while rather predictable, its pacing is excellent.
In general I've found the people who think the same “sucks”, just got mad at the control scheme, gave up after a few minutes, and whined about it for the next 18 years.
My dad was reading Lord of the Rings to me as a bedtime story since I was like 5 or something. I don't speak fluent Elvish or anything, but I guess I'm up there in the top 1% of middle-earth scholars. And I'm not one of those picky elitists. I absolutely loved Jackson's films. This however... I'm not sold on yet. I wasn't buying that elf voiceover at all. It sounded enthusiastic. Which is not what anyone who knows something about LOTR thinks an elf sounds like. And the name. “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” ? The “rings” in the first part of the title, are the same “rings” as the “rings” in the second part of the title. Really? It's like seeing a film called, “Spider-Man: The Man Who Has Superpowers” That, in my mind, is a bad sign.
