Movie Filmed Entirely with Smartphone and 35mm Lens.

Dear GS Homeslices,

Technology, when used in a practical manner, can be quite the head-turner. Just this morning, as I checked my email, I came across this news clip http://www.japantoday.com/category/arts-culture/view/u-s-director-makes-first-smartphone-movie And the openning reads:

LOS ANGELES —

An independent U.S. filmmaker has made what is believed to be the first feature-length movie shot with a smartphone, to be released next week—with actress Gena Rowlands in the starring role.

"Olive," about "a little girl who transforms the lives of three people without speaking one word," was filmed using only a Nokia N8 cell phone, with a high-resolution camera adapted with a 35 mm lens to give added depth of field.

"Technology is moving so quickly and cellphones are really going to be the thing that does everything eventually," director Hooman Khalili told AFP in an interview ahead of the U.S. theater release of his movie on Dec 16.

Dude filmed an entire movie with a Nokia N8 and a 35mm lens attached. Too freaking sweet. :D

OmniTouch Screenless!

Dear GS Homeslices,

Yesterday, while checking out Yahoo News, I watched a video clip of a new screenless technology. Wanting to learn more about it, I dug up the Youtube clip of it. It was called "OmniTouch" and it rocked. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pz17lbjOFn8

The tech it seems to use is actually quite old: touch screen, mini-projection, shape recognition, etc... What's not old is OmniTouch's portable size and the impressive A.I. required to keep track of all the stuff going on and the user's responses to it. That attribute actually impressed me quite a bit. If they can make it reasonably priced and a tad smaller, I'm up for it. Nonetheless, it's still a few years away.

As stuff like this opens up new ways of doing things, console gaming is losing stock with me at a torrid pace. I'm already starting to rule out getting a 3DS. And the 8th gen, when it arrives, will move on without my caring to jump on board.

Killer Lines from Ginger Snaps!

Dear GS Homeslices,

Considering it's Halloween time and I've become a Ginger Snaps-aholic, I figure it only right that I drop some lines from the first movie in the series. Obviously better written than Twilight, the first Ginger Snaps had some trippy conversations with some killer dialogue. So, without further adue...

"Baxter's fertilizer." Emily Perkins as Brigitte Fitzgerald

"Wrists are for girls. I'm slitting my throat." Katherine Issabelle as Ginger Fitzgerald

"Our deaths will rock, B...United against life as we know it." Ginger

"Hay, search and destroy." Ginger "Trina Sinclair...DOA at the hair dye aisle. Perished while seeking matching barrets on nothing but diet pills and laxatives." Brigitte

"Just so you know: the words 'just' and 'cramps'? They don't go together." Ginger

"So you got bit by a big hormone." Brigitte "Not by what you think 'cause they don't exist." Ginger

"Did I change lastnight, howl at the moon, kill s___ and change back this morning? No. Did it take a silver bullet to kill that thing? No. It got killed by a f___ing truck."

"See, I've flattened an animal before. Furry, all fours. But here I am thinking 'lycanthrope'. I know, that's crazy, huh? Book me into the rubber motel I'm officially all f___ed up, right?" Sam, neighborhood pot dealer. "Well, what if you're not?" Brigitte "Well, that would explain the human circumsized d___. And why you were running for your life from it." Sam

"And everything I look at goes silver bullet, in a gun, to my head, the end." Brigitte

" There's all this squirming and squealing. And he's done. And you're like...oh." Ginger, after eating a neighbor's dog

The Descent of Rokuro Okajima.

Dear GS Homeslices,

Here I go on another Anime rant. I know some of you do not like Anime -even seinen Anime, despite its awesomeness. If you don't, then simply leave now.

I just finished watching a Youtube clip of the fifth and final episode of Black Lagoon season 3: Roberta's Blood Trail (English subbed). And I gotta say, it flat out rocked. The story, the characters, the presentation... Despite being a very short 5 episode ova, they didn't slack off on anything. Definately getting the English dub when it hits the states.

All of this said, I gotta admit, the character Rokuro"Rok" Okajima has been living in that sess pool Roanapur for too damn long. Dude's becoming as twisted as Mr Chang and Balalaika. Worse, he does his 'negotiating' from a rather self-righteous stance. In his efforts to 'purge Roanapur', he makes some very ruthless decisions that really make me question what kinda s.o.b. he's turning into.

Rok's relationship with Revy has become both more intimate and yet more strained. She's getting tired of being dragged into his 'save the world' s___. At the same time, you can tell by how some scenes play out that they're basically sleeping together. This mixture of love and resentment gives them one of the most complex and human relationships I've seen in an Anime yet. On one hand, they obviously love eachother. But on the other hand, Revy acknowledges Rok's slimey side and has no qualms busting his chops about it.

All in all, Black Lagoon is turning out to not just be thoroughly entertaining but increasingly thought provoking. The series allows its characters to live in the morally grey area which most real world people very much live in. And the characters' moral ambiguity and obvious feelings toward eachother give it a depth that most western works sorely lack. From the friendship and tension between the members of Lagoon Company and Roanapur's criminal gangs, to Rok and Revy's romance, to Rok's dangerous self righteousness, to Mr Chang's manipulative tactics... Black Lagoon keeps on keepin' on.

From carts to discs and back to carts...or cards

Dear GS Homeslices,

Am I the only person noticing the gaming industry's shift back to a cartridge or, moreover, card media format? This is obviously in regards to handhelds. The DS and 3DS use the card format with great success, both commercially and in regard to its usefulness to gamers ourselves. Now Playstation Vita is on the way with its NVG cards, and I actually like where it's going. Kudos to Sony for getting on board.

Ease of use, no load times (none that I've experienced yet), durability, portability (try lugging a bunch of discs in your jacket pocket)...are just some of the obvious benifits. Hopefully, lower development costs will also become an industry norm. After the catastrophic number of developer collapses during the 7th gen, the 'big 3'(Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft) need to come up with something. Going with a cheaper card (cartridge-esque) format may very well be what the tech doctor ordered.

But that's just my take on the issue. Honestly, I'm really feeling the card format. There's potential for lower development costs, more room for creative risks and the continued BC with my favs that it can offer.

Gimme your take, will ya'?

The Nine Satanic Sins, for the curious.

Dear GS Homeslices,

Inspired to clear some things up by a new friend on GS, I've decided to put LaVeyan Satanism into perspective by enlightening you all to some of our views. Hopefully, this will clear some things up.

The Nine Satanic Sins

1. Stupidity—The top of the list for Satanic Sins. The Cardinal Sin of Satanism. It's too bad that stupidity isn't painful. Ignorance is one thing, but our society thrives increasingly on stupidity. It depends on people going along with whatever they are told. The media promotes a cultivated stupidity as a posture that is not only acceptable but laudable. Satanists must learn to see through the tricks and cannot afford to be stupid.

2. Pretentiousness—Empty posturing can be most irritating and isn't applying the cardinal rules of Lesser Magic. On equal footing with stupidity for what keeps the money in circulation these days. Everyone's made to feel like a big shot, whether they can come up with the goods or not.

3. Solipsism—Can be very dangerous for Satanists. Projecting your reactions, responses and sensibilities onto someone who is probably far less attuned than you are. It is the mistake of expecting people to give you the same consideration, courtesy and respect that you naturally give them. They won't. Instead, Satanists must strive to apply the dictum of "Do unto others as they do unto you." It's work for most of us and requires constant vigilance lest you slip into a comfortable illusion of everyone being like you. As has been said, certain utopias would be ideal in a nation of philosophers, but unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately, from a Machiavellian standpoint) we are far from that point.

4. Self-deceit—It's in the "Nine Satanic Statements" but deserves to be repeated here. Another cardinal sin. We must not pay homage to any of the sacred cows presented to us, including the roles we are expected to play ourselves. The only time self-deceit should be entered into is when it's fun, and with awareness. But then, it's not self-deceit!

5. Herd Conformity—That's obvious from a Satanic stance. It's all right to conform to a person's wishes, if it ultimately benefits you. But only fools follow along with the herd, letting an impersonal entity dictate to you. The key is to choose a master wisely instead of being enslaved by the whims of the many.

6. Lack of Perspective—Again, this one can lead to a lot of pain for a Satanist. You must never lose sight of who and what you are, and what a threat you can be, by your very existence. We are making history right now, every day. Always keep the wider historical and social picture in mind. That is an important key to both Lesser and Greater Magic. See the patterns and fit things together as you want the pieces to fall into place. Do not be swayed by herd constraints—know that you are working on another level entirely from the rest of the world.

7. Forgetfulness of Past Orthodoxies—Be aware that this is one of the keys to brainwashing people into accepting something new and different, when in reality it's something that was once widely accepted but is now presented in a new package. We are expected to rave about the genius of the creator and forget the original. This makes for a disposable society.

8. Counterproductive Pride—That first word is important. Pride is great up to the point you begin to throw out the baby with the bathwater. The rule of Satanism is: if it works for you, great. When it stops working for you, when you've painted yourself into a corner and the only way out is to say, I'm sorry, I made a mistake, I wish we could compromise somehow, then do it.

9. Lack of Aesthetics—This is the physical application of the Balance Factor. Aesthetics is important in Lesser Magic and should be cultivated. It is obvious that no one can collect any money off klassical standards of beauty and form most of the time so they are discouraged in a consumer society, but an eye for beauty, for balance, is an essential Satanic tool and must be applied for greatest magical effectiveness. It's not what's supposed to be pleasing—it's what is. Aesthetics is a personal thing, reflective of one's own nature, but there are universally pleasing and harmonious configurations that should not be denied.

DS or 3DS? PSP or Vita?

Dear GS Homeslices,

Like many of you, I've found my Retro and Niche gaming tastes met quite nicely on handhelds. The combination of affordability and low development costs have allowed handhelds to get showered with both Old School remakes and experimental goodies galore. Both the DS and the, less popular but equally awesome, PSP have remained swamped with the types of games that keep me...well...gaming.

This brings us to a new set of issues now that the 3DS has arrived and the Vita is on the way. The 3DS' initial price was a put-off, as was the battery life. The move to 3D is understandable as it both capitalizes on a new trend and makes piracy much more difficult. But the toll it took on the 3DS' sales was glaring: people didn't want to buy it for their kids because of price and the 'eye damage' concern and grown-ups themselves avoided it because they enjoy handhelds for cheap and portable fun. Needless to say, Nintendo took a bit of a beating for it and even as a DS owner and lover I'm siding with fellow consumers on the issue. Vita, with its potential price, looks like it may have very similar struggles. We'll see where it goes.

The upside to the 3DS and Vita are obviously their backward compatibility with the DS and PSP libraries. It'd be pretty damn dumb to do what Sony did with the PS3 (no PS2 compatibility). Especially for the 3DS, as the DS is the clear winner of the 7th gen hardware wars: 147 million units sold, almost as many as the PS2 (150 million) in only half the damn time! The PSP hasn't sold as well, at less than 70 million units, but has a strong following and its own stable of klassix. Not to mention, the number of PS2 goodies that have either been re-released for or have sequels or spin-offs on the PSP. Needless to say, Sony telling people they can't play Dissidia or Persona 3 on the Vita would be a nice big bullet in their foot. With the PSP line-up and the PSN catalogue of PS1 downloadables, Sony's sitting on almost as big a gold mine as Nintendo.

As for me? I'm holding on to my DS lite for at least another year before thinking about the 3DS. But the PSP is on my radar as an additional gaming device. The industry is deliberately trying to kill off the PS2 in attempts to force people toward the PS3 and many of my PS2 favs are coming to the PSP in droves. Parasite Eve's sequel, the Shin Megami Tensei games, Rachet & Clank, Final Fantasy remakes, etc... So that makes the PSP a shoe-in for an additional gaming device.

Mas Obscure Games...

Dear GS Homeslices,

Below are some Youtube clips of some more of my (and possibly some of your) fav obscure games!

Burning Force (Sega Genesis), used to rock it on me old Genesis back in the 1990s. Now I rocks it via Kega Fusion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpQk26HS9jM

Contra Hard Corps (Sega Genesis), yeah... I'm gonna go as far as to say it's actually better than Contra III for the SNES! Live with it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfwnSPK48TU

Skeleton Krew (Sega Genesis), another game I used to rock on Sega Channel back in 1995-1996. Again, I'm resorting to Kega Fusion to continue enjoying it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zWve-kubBI

SVC Chaos (Neo Geon-SNK/PS2/original XBox), this is another one I continue to play and love. I rock it via NeoRage. It's basically the SNK version of Capcom vs SNK. The SNK graphic ztyle actually makes the game look much harder edged than its Capcom counterpart. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFFruLsIOiM

UN Squadron (SNES), I still don't understand why Nintendo and Capcom haven't gotten off their pompous asses and brought this puppy to the Virtual Console. My step-Dad and I used to play the Hell outta it when I was a teenager. Today, like many of my old SNES favs, I'm rocking it via zsnes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpBT6Sy4tJk&feature=related

I hope y'all dug these. Mas on zeh way, homeslices!

Obscure Gaming Awesomeness

Dear GS Homeslices,

Below are some links to Youtube clips of some killer obscure games. These puppies could easily find their way unto your best of lists. Check'em out!

Body Count (Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Europe), rail-shooter goodie before the term existed. Pretty damn good rail-shooter for an old 16-bit console. I first rocked it back in 1996 via Sega Channel. Now, I rock it via rom on Kega Fusion.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noLni6y-_1k

Shogo MAD (PC via GOG download), like an Anime mech first person shooter with both single and multiplayer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVPyJuK2daM

Bahamut Lagoon (SNES, English fan translation), I heard of this killer RPG back a few years ago. But only when I began dabbling in emus (zsnes, Kega Fusion) did I actually get to play it. Simply amazing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OplVo9Yeitw

Gorky 17 (PC via GOG download), it's like survival horror meets turn-based strategy. Think Resident Evil or Dino Crisis meets FF Tactics!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVPyJuK2daM

Guilty Gear X2 #Reload (PC via GOG download), y'all already know how much I love the GG games. Well, if you don't know, watch and find out why.

MDK2... An Old School PC Gem.

Dear GS Homeslices,

My love of many things Old School (yes, I believe the term should recieve capitol initials) has played a big part in my becoming more of a PC gamer these days -save for the DS lite. GOG in particular has served me well in my Retro tastes. Many of my 5th and 6th gen favs have PC versions available dirt cheap via download. Among Prince of Persia SoT, Unreal Tournament GOTY, Guilty Gear X2 Reload, Beyond Good & Evil, Psychonauts, Giants Citizen Kabuto, Second Sight, Oddworld... we find MDK2.

I fondly remember playing MDK(1) on a friend's Playstation, back in 1997 in St Petersburg, Florida. And on the strength of that memory -and the awesomeness of MDK2- I may just splurge another $6 for it. MDK2, on the other hand, has my attention at the moment. It's hard to believe that just over 200MB of harddisc space and early PS2 era graphics can package such an awesome 3rd person platformer...but, I'll be damned, it does.

First off, the action: 3rd person 3D platforming, shooting, stealth and puzzle solving. I love Ratchet & Clank and Jak & Daxter. But the MDK series did it first and did it just as good. Bear in mind, the first MDK was developed before Mario 64.

Next, the story: Comedic and satirical. MDK (1 & 2) mocks the whole reluctant hero theme with Kurt -a guy happier as a janitor than a suped up badass. Our hyper masculine tough guy is Max -a six legged dog, who smokes cigars, loves guns...and requires constant rescuing. Then there's our brainiac/eccentric genius -Dr Hawkins, whom is a rather bumbling mad scientist only interested in saving humanity so that he may continue conducting inhumane experiments on random humans. What a crew.

Lastly, artwork and level design: Another area where MDK2 shines. A combination of techy, spacey and Tim Burton-esque... BioWare (KotOR, Mass Effect) took over from Shiny (Earthworm Jim) and built on designs that were already pretty sweet. Apperantly, BioWare cut their teeth on titles like MDK2 before crafting the 6th and 7th gen RPGs which many of you know and love. The result is a rocker.

Some of you will simply blow MDK2 off simply because it's old. Some may be perfectly content with console favs like R&C or J&D. If so, I can dig it. Though, there is a PS2 version of MDK2. Just in case you get curious.
