mabey just b/c of nuclear weapons idk but yeah france isnt known for having the best defense...as matter of fact alot of your countries seem out of order

mixedplanet
France is a first world country and part of the security council based upon stuff that happened 60 years ago is beyond me.. Furthermore how is Japan so high, I thought ever sense WW2 they were not allowed to have a large military?

I think they are so high because while they don't have large numbers, the technology their military utilizes is top notch.

I totally agree and the same goes for UK as well.

I'm surprised to see India that high up on the list. horgen123
The indian and chinese army have improved a lot in rankings this year .the chinese have developed most of their weapons and at this rate might even surpass US(\i hope that doesnt happen) and India has been increasing its weaponry ,navy and airforce with billion dollar deals with USA and Israel and Russia .I think India is the only country that uses both russian and American weapons and they are doing this because their not so good relations with China but they still are way behind china even in a non nuclear conventional war.

1-US- Obvious, nobody would have a chance in a one on one type war except........

2-Russia- Still the country that the US scared itself Sh##less about. Not as technologically advance as in the 80's, but still extremely pwerful

3-China- #'s are important, extremely important.

4-UK- US, and UK are the only two countries with a large aircraft carrier fleet

5-India-........... numbers

6-Germany- Technologicaly advance, but not really built for wars in the present like the countries above

7-France- Same^^^

8- Brazil- #s

9- Israel- Very advanced military, and extremely good tactically in every war they've had so far

10-North Korea- 10% of the population is already in the military, and they have the largest amount of artillery in the whole planet. Very powerful military, and its not a good idea to mess with it.

Thanx at last some one who is giving a decent enough and well informed reply I almost agree with that but I think that germany should be ahead of france and maybe even India. because the list on global fire power does not include training ,nukes etc.

It doesn't include Nukes? Thats kinda odd, since nukes would be a pretty huge part of a total war. But, yeah I forgot that Germany doesn't have nukes (weird since they were the first to attempt to develop them) So I'd probably have to put France higher. Does Brazil have nukes?

I don't think brazil has nukes ,The only countries that have nukes according me are US ,CHINA,UK ,RUSSIA.FRANCE,INDIA,PAKISTAN,NORTH KOREA AND ISRAEL,maybe iran . http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_states_with_nuclear_weapons

Erm.. the British SAS kicks ass..

CBR600-RR
I agree but they are way behind in numbers but if only training ,technology ,hand to hand combat ,stealth ,fitness and other key factors are taken into account they are ranked number one yes even better than us (US) but numbers mean a lot and thats where they lack but being such a small country they are still at number 5 which is impressive.

I don't think this takes individual circumstances into consideration. While it is a good list, I believe North Korea should be higher, whilst Japan and Taiwan should be lower.

Individual circumstances include the chance of being 'invaded', the nature of the invasion and the international backing of nations if there ever was an invasion. For example, Israel has a higher chance of being invaded than Canada due to its geo-political situation. Countries like Germany and France need a large amount of ground troops if they ever get invaded, whilst Australia doesn't need a lot of ground troops if they have a tough enough air force and navy to stop an invading force getting to the country. Also, countries like Indonesia and Pakistan don't have the backing that countries like Canada, South Korea and Australia have, as if either of the latter nations were to be invaded there are a multitude of treaties that would allow for other nations (most notably the US) to help out.

Japan too high, Brazil too high, Germany too high, France too high, Israel too low, North Korea too low...and where is Finland? th3warr1or
Finaland is not even in the top 42 and its army is too weak to be on the list France (0.636) and Germany (0.672) are relative equals for the most part but the GFP formula gives a slight edge to France thanks to an aircraft carrier and capable navy as well as a bump in defense spending. Brazil (0.756) is the most powerful South American country on the list thanks to available manpower and a capable navy. Japan (0.920) is a "sleeper" power that sneaks into the top ten with a good navy, strong logistical infrastructure and capital. Israel just lacks behind in numbers .
