@mclarenmaster18: Sadly for the Gamecube itself, Gamecube was in a bad place/time when it was competing both PS2 and Xbox when Xbox was the new to the gaming world, Gamecube had poor sales even though it had really great games, F-Zero GX suffer because Gamecube had very little support but it was still a great console of it's time.
I’m surprised Nintendo can’t just hire some run-of-the-mill Indie studio, hand them a copy of F-Zero GX and make it just so fans can shut up about it.
GCN's market was definitely smaller based on the # of consoles sold however, GCN still has more games in the top 10 sales list for that generation than Xbox. Most successful GCN games achieved about 2 million of sales and 5 of the games just above the 2 million sales mark make up the bottom 5 of the top 10 list for GCN sales.
F-Zero GX sold 1.5 million copies and it qualified for player's choice. It was in no means a major success but I wouldn't deem it a commercial failure either. I bought the console a week after launch and played non stop till 2004-2005. Games like Super Smash Bros, Luigi's Mansion, Sonic Adventure ports, Double Dash and Metroid Prime had great advertising efforts. I can't remember a single time where FZero GX was mentioned prior to the late summer release in '03 or after the release.
The thing with generation 6 was that it was the beginning of a major transition point in gaming. Generation 6 brought such advanced versions of 8 bit and 16 bit games but in some cases was kind of a way to bid farewell to those same franchises.
