i like matchmaking, it helps keep the variety in the game and keep it fresh. if i kept playing the same game type and map over and over, i would get bored of it so quick and soon my favorite map and game type would become my most hatedchaoscougar1One of the most overused excuses to support matchmaking. People consider themselves too stupid to pick a DIFFERENT MAP. If you want randomness in serverlists then go down the list with your eyes closed and pick one. I also agree that Halo 3 does not have anywhere near the fastest matchmaking.

It may have appeared like that to the public but the reason M$ gave WAS about 360 degree immersion.By the way- the name "xbox 360" did not come from microsoft wanting to give the impression of 360 degree 'immersion', they did it as a marketing defense against the PS3. It's odd but they called it the xbox 360 because it has to compete with the PS3. get it? Xbox "2" < Playstation "3". Just wanted to share that lol.

I have seen some games do it horribly (Gears of War could have been improved), but other games do it wonderfully (Lost Planet). Some games should have had it (GTA4).
I don't think it is completely necessary because i have found that i do like CoD4 and Halo 3 quite a bit. It works well enough so you do play all the maps because when it comes down to certain PC games it seems that many of them like to play the same 3 maps over and over and over again. They may be good, but it gets boring.
Some games that could have used it like GTA 4 could have used removing social from the game and allowing guests in ranked because have nearly 30 different gametypes really spreads the game a little thing. So that game could have used multiple fixes. But i don't think it would have been necessary to add a server list. Because while they are nice i have only seen LP do it super well with its auto updating list. Otherwise i have only seen Gears of War with the limited like 5 server choices and long refreshing times for new servers...

Yes Gears does take awhile to refresh the serverlists, I would really like to see a high budget popular game come out with an audo updating serverlist that also allowed you to party up. It would work by only showing you the games that have enough empty room for your party.
Best of both worlds.
BF:BC had a great way to find games. You got to choose between ranked or unranked, the map,and what mode you wanted. Also TF2 for the xbox 360 lets you choose. I prefer getting to choose what i play rather than random.

True there are a few games that may be "kinda" popular that don't use matchmaking but the point of this post was to point out how all the games are becoming "infected" with it and how there is no end in sight and people don't seem to care at all.
P.S.: I own TF2 for the PC and love every minute of it. Have nearly 400 Hours logged into it according to X-Fire.
I've never seen anything wrong with good ole' Serverlists in games.
It's simple and I get to play EXACTLY what I want while being able to choose the game with the best connection while being able to completly aviod those certain "terrible" maps every game has because unlike matchmaking IT ACTUALLY LETS ME PICK MY MAP.
Enter Halo 2 and it's matchmaking that has taken over the gaming industry, we couldn't pick our map we wanted to play but I was sure it was an oversight and that it was probably left out to meet some deadline and was SURE Halo 3's matchmaking would include such a basic feature in an online game..... I was wrong. I honestly thought by 2007 we would AT THE VERY LEAST have a matchmaking system that at least lets us pick the map we want.
What's worse is that nearly every popular game on the 360 now uses matchmaking, even Gears of War 2 uses it which has completly ruined the experience for me. (aside for other obvious design choices)
Here we are in 2009 and games are moving AWAY from choice and forcing me into maps I never wanted to play in the first place. IMO matchmaking is moving the gaming industry backwards taking away from the freedom of gamers.
I find it hilarious that the "360" in the Xbox's name was used because the console was supposted to "put the expierience around the gamer." You were supposted to get unpresidented choice in everything you did. Yet the 360 has more games that use matchamaking than ANY other console... Irony much?
Let us not forget that Matchmaking lets team stacking with your friends easier than ever while making every one else's expierence terrible.
Yea but the "improvement" on some games may be taken subjectivly.
For example on Halo 3 when you play in HD you simply are able to see more of it's flaws. Such as it's complete lack of AA and the face it's really only 640P which makes it even blurrier on LCD monitors/TV's.
COD4 is running nativly at 600P so the game also has a blurry tone to it +AA and it can look washed out at times. (and goregous at others)
On the upside the text is clearer and the enemies in the distance are easier to make out in HD.

Sorry? PC you have to buy hardware upgrades to even play games from year to year. Gets a little pricey. And most PC games are on the 360 anyway.

If you know what to buy when, it'll last you a few years.
Besides my fav. PC games are FAR better supported on the PC. (l4D and TF2)
TF2- not one update for the 360.
L4D- The PC has recived many bug fixes the 360 won't see till' spring.
I won't disagree. I work on computers so I know how to build them but for average Joe's it can be more complicated than just buying a console. And it has been a known grip that Valve only cares about their PC users that's why the 360 doesn't see updates for a long time.Yea, if my fav. games weren't Valve games then I could see more of a point for renewing that LIVE subscription.
Also, I'm going to guess that L4D's community will be far larger than the 360 version in a few years.
I also hate how the population on Console games roll over and die as soon as a new console comes out. Good luck getting on your Xbox1 and getting into an online match of anything other than Halo 2 onine.
My PC games will still be played years from now.
Simple answer: Rainbow Six. The amount of strategy required in the game keeps all the kids with short attention spans out, so there's none of that annoying crap that plauges halo and gears. You CHOOSE what map/game type you want, and you can even customize game options. As for it being a camp fest, you'll find that there are very few places to camp, and even if you find a nice juicy spot, it won't be safe for very long.
The only thing that sucks is that most of the community has moved on to the CoD games. At this point in time I'd pass over the original R6: Vegas and go straight for the second one, if you're looking for online fun. If you also enjoy single player then get the first R6: Vegas as well, because the story is better in it :)

I actually own R6V2 but only bought it because my friends said they were going to....bastards didn't and left me alone with it. I beat campaign and haven't touched it much yet.
As mentioned in my OP I hate games where I die in seemingly two shots... are there any game modes that let me instantly respawn?
Dying in two shots from a pistol from half way across the map and then waiting 5 min to play again is pretty boring IMO.
ive gotten to that point a couple times in my life, but now isnt one of them, i have way too many games that ive barely played (havent even put mass effect in my disc tray yet) but also in saying that ive always loved Halos multiplayer, and having to play maps and modes you dont like is part of the game (which is good cause its nice to have a change, otherwise u thing u loved youd soon hate cause ud play it non stop) and its great with friendschaoscougar1
I'm usually aware when I'm playing something "too much" (a map, gametype etc.) and will move onto something else. But to take away nearly all my choice is just terrible and thats what every matchmaking system I've seen has done.
L4D has a matchmaker that lets you pick your "map" (known as "movies") so why not Halo, COD, and Gears 2?
Most even penalize you for leaving, I can't help not wanting to play Sandtrap on Halo 3 for the 4th time in a row just because the matchmaker wants me to.
Or even staying in a laggy game the matchmaker put me in (dispite me hitting "prefer good connection") will get me penalized as well.
