Hello everyone!
Well, as you all know Resident Evil 5 finally came out on Friday and I picked up my copy on that day! Later that evening, a few of my bf's friends came over to his house and we all had an RE5 party.
My impressions of the game so far
I've restarted the game about three times now. Why? Well, the first time was when my friends and I played together, the second time was the next day and my bf and I wanted to restart it because we weren't really able to get into the game with a ton of people around us, and the third time was on my PS3 after I took my game home.
Even though I've played through the beginning three times already, the game doesn't get old. At all. Resident Evil 5 is one of those games that is just so fun - you don't want to stop playing it. And when you aren't playing - you're thinking about playing it.
There have been a lot of mixed reactions regarding Resident Evil 5's control scheme. Some love it, some hate it - and I think that's how it's going to remain depending on what types of games you are used to playing. I had no problems with Resident Evil 4's control scheme; and since I'm not a huge FPS gamer, I didn't mind the whole can't move while shooting deal. In terms of controls RE5 pretty much stayed the same, although there are some new additions. Namely, the game allows you to be able to press any of the directional buttons and instantly be able to toggle through guns or herbs, which is a lot better than having to pause the game, go to your inventory and search through for a weapon or herb. This new addition really keeps the intense flow of combat going.
The graphics are amazing. Definitely one of the best looking games I've ever played (save maybe Uncharted). The cinematics are top-notch and the cutscenes are extremely life-like and dynamic.
The sound is also incredible. And so is the music - fitting to the game's overall theme, it provides all the much-needed tension and coupled with the hordes of Majini, it truly delivers quite a fun and tense experience.
Overall, the game is extremely addicting and fun. The only complaint I might have is that it really doesn't feel like a Resident Evil game at all. I'm pretty sure a lot of us saw this coming with the last interation in the series, but now it is more concrete than ever. There are a few reasons as to why. You never feel truly alone like you did in past Resident Evils. Since Sheva is almost always with you (and when you are seperated, it's not for a very long time) you always have someone to rely on in case things get sticky. Her ability to revive you when you are close to dying provides a security blanket and sheds away the fear that past titles in the series provided so well.
Also, the atmosphere isn't very scary at all. I remember being on-edge in fear almost continuously when playing other games in the series (even RE4), but it doesn't feel that way when playing RE5 at all. I almost feel like I'm playing another game that just happens to have characters from the series. This is really too bad because not only is it a Resident Evil game, but that was one of the things that made the series so gripping and unforgettable.
Regardless, this game is awesome so far! I am really thoroughly enjoying it and I can't wait to get back to playing it.
I highly recommend this game, especially for series veterans.
I'd love to keep rambling, however, finals are calling my name. xD
