What possible reason would they have to do that? Current PS3s have the hardware GPU and CPU for the PS2. Why would they disable either of them? That would be extremely stupid.

to move to a complete software emulation package. they do not want some people to be doing hardware and some to be doing software. they want everybody on the same page.

That is ridiculous. Why gimp early adopters just so "everybody is on the same page". I'm sorry, but there is no way this is going to happen.

I'm almost 99 percent sure it will happen. I think I actually read something about them doing it as well. If you have units out there doing emulation via hardware and some via software you effectively have two SKU's on the market and that doubles the known support paths.

Because it keeps everything on an even keel. It also means that BC issues will also be delt with for one emulation medium. It would also open the door for upscaling old PS1/PS2 games and the possibility of playing downloadable PS1 games on the PS3 which are presently only able to be played via a PSP. Including the EE/GS was always just a temporary fix because the software emulator wasn't ready for the JP/US launch.

Sony is pretty close to having all of it's profits eaten up by the PS3. In three quarters it's lost 1 billion dollars, and for a company that only makes a couple of billion a year, that's a huge hit.

The price of Sony being innovative could be seeing it go under. Other things Sony is known for is exploding laptop batteries and spyware.RahnAetas
You need better information. Sony hasn't posted a quarterly loss in several years.

Who said F1 was going to be a great game?  It's  a niche game like Arena Football from EA.

PS3 still flopping hard even after VF5. Danthegamingman
I'd say it's doing rather well for having no games and a $600 price.

While the $699 was steep, it died because at that price, it didn't do anything extra. VCDs? Ha...Playstation 3 does high def movies, networking, and is an open source platform with all kinds of non-official possibilities...And not to mention you can get it $200 cheaper than the MSRP of the 3DO at launch.TekkenMaster606
Technically it's a $500 difference when you account for inflation. To compare the 3D0's price to the PS3 is sheer lunacy. But it's always good for a laugh when someone tries to.

None of them are flopping or will flop.  There is room for 3 consoles in today's market.  Especially when 1 (the wii) serves a totally different purpose than the other 2.
