[QUOTE="alfy13"]Earlier this week we had lot's of thread saying that Walmart and HD DVD is going to kill Blu Ray and PS3. but this link from y esterday has confused me. What do you guys think? it seems walmart has debunked the rumors . tango90101

i wouldn't count your chickens just yet.

Irony.

it's not irony..walmart has been eyeing hd dvd for a while now...

it's only the blind-allegiant sony fans that can't wrap their heads around the fact the cheapest player will win...

ie; hd dvd...

No, the ironic part is that you are telling people not to count their chickens just yet, but you ran with the Walmart story as if it were fact the day the "story" broke.    In addition you have some nerve to accuse anyone on this site of being blindly allegiant.  And that we call hypocrisy.

From my understanding, that was a mis-translation. Instead, Wal-mart will be introducing $299 Blu-ray players. Not HD-DVD.

NYCgamer47

It will be neither at the moment according to Walmart.

You'd think that people would just step back and wait for confirmation on things before they run with them.

[QUOTE="Bread_or_Decide"]

[QUOTE="Blinblingthing"]Remember PS2 and PSP still make money for Sony.fuzzysquash

and the Blu-Ray movie format is outselling HD-DVD.

i don' think the money being made for sony with the ps2, psp and bluray isn't enough to stem the losses created by the ps3.

Do you have statistics to back that up? How much money has the PS3 lost? How much money has the PS2, PSP, and blu-ray library gained for Sony since the PS3's launch? Don't know?

Then I guess all you have is an unsubstantiated assumption.

According to SEC filings since the PS3's release, Sony's gaming division has posted losses.

You lost me the moment you quoted some "dude's analysis". That's where the whole theory falls apart. I realize the guy puts a disclaimer that he is guessing but seriously no one knows unless you are the CFO of SOE/Microsoft.

To answer your question, there is no doubt SOE will never pull the plug on PS3....specially 5 months into it's life ROFL. For one, Blu-Ray is key to a new revenue stream and the key to Blu-Ray right now is PS3. That's the problem they have, they put all their eggs in one basket and now they have no choice but to watch what happens in the next few years. X360 IMO is still selling at disappointing numbers for a console that is over a year old. Maybe people should start asking if Microsoft would pull the plug on their game division if they can't make significant improvements this time around.

tango90101

MS has penetrated 50% of last gen's customerbase. in ONE year.

sony has penetrated 1% approaching the 6 month mark.

tell me again how the 360 isn't selling good...;)

How do you figure the 360 has made a 50% penetration?  Didn't the original Xbox sell over 30 Million?

[QUOTE="ramey70"]I can't believe this game is actually taken seriously by anyone over the age of 8. You might as well play a Sponge Bob game or Barbie Dolls with your kid sister.GundamGuy0

I don't think anyone under the age of 8 would fully understand the complexities involved evolution / stat's gain system. It's not as streight forward as it seems.

I don't care if the game requires a thorough knowledge of quantum physics.  It's pokemon.   It's like when I see a tard in a souped up Ford Mustang.  At the end of the day he's still driving a teenage girl's car.

[QUOTE="skektek"][QUOTE="yuna707"]

... yada, yada, yada, long profits are 1.5 billion generally give or take three hundred million. By now Sony has lost AT LEAST 1 YEAR OF PROFIT to date, and potentially 2 YEARS of profit.

In perspective, over 6 years, MS has lost 5.4 billion, with a yearly profit of around 12 billion. Roughly 40%. A heck of a lot, and I'll admit that the venture will probably never be profitable, but in perspective, not as scary as it seems.

Already the Ps3 has all but eliminated the profits of the ps2. The most successful system of all time. And its still losing money, 240 USD loss has gone down, but thats NOT factoring the fact that Sony sells them to retailers for LESS than 600, probably 550 at highest. So realistically the loss is still at least 200 USD.

Sony is going to have to wakeup, lose the smug attitude, and listen to their accountants. It would not be too unrealistic to think that Sony MAY pull outof the race...blah, blah, blah

XYZVector

A couple of points:

1. Consoles are typically loss leaders. They are designed to be sold at a loss and profits are either made at a later point or in other areas.

2. Productions costs drop significantly over time. Blue diodes have already dropped in price, a die shrink to 65nm is right around the corner and all future PS3s will most likely run BC through emulation eliminating the cost of including the EE on board.

3. income - expenditures = profits

what you are doing is

income - expenditures = profits - expenditures (PS3 operating losses)

While Sony's gaming division is losing money Sony as a whole is still profitable. Taken *out of context* the gaming division's losses don't look very bright to investors but that is why you have to look at *the whole picture* (see point #1). It takes a lot of initial capital to launch a juggernaut like the PS3 and Sony and their investors realize that.

In short you should leave the fortune telling to Miss Cleo and her Psychic Friends Network ;)

How do you figure, sony being profitable when they are publicly admiting they are losing money for the past 4 quarters. Sony is in a poor position to subsidise the PS3.

Sony hasn't lost money for the past 4 quarters.  Where do you get your info?
