I wouldnt call it ruining a character. Simply making it more complex than Nintendo's target audience would really understand. I dont think that Nintendo is trying to change anything with birdo either. They seem to have gone "this is Birdo, Birdo is trans. Now, lets move on" Birdo is a rather minor character when you think about it. His most important rolls have been in Superstar saga, and SMB2. That and the countless sporting events.
Oh and dude, play any game with luigi and the slightest amount of character development. Luigi is gay no doubt about it.
He's with Daisy man, and doesn't have a problem showing affection either (see; fountains on the Daisy Circuit) unlike Mario who never shows one iota of interest in Peach.
Um, have you never play any Mario game? How many times does he save her? How many times does she kiss his cheek and he says "Yahooooooooooooooooooo!" Have you not played Mario Galaxy? Because at the end he holds Peach's hand.
