I still think digital is the way to go for this problem. Not that all games should solely be digital, but they should all be available digitally for a reduced price. This takes care of a lot of the used game problem since you can't sell a digital copy. Plus it keeps games available for longer periods of time, so there's a good chance for increased sales that way. Not to mention you're not cutting out used sales altogether, so your games can still reach a larger audience with a smaller budget. Currently they still think they can charge full price for digital games though. Which is ridiculous. The money saved not haveing to manufacture and distribute digital copies of games should be passed on to the player as an incentive to buy digital. If I'm gonna fork over $60 for a game, you bet your sweet ass I want a physical copy to sell if it sucks and make some of my money back. You have any idea how pissed I'd be if I was stuck with an awful $60 game on my harddrive? I guess I would finish it on general principle then, but still, I would not be a happy dude. However, that same game for $40 wouldn't piss me off quite so much. Going that route might also have the benifit of forcing developers to make better quality games. If you're stuck with a turd, you're likley not to trust that developer for future games.
I notice a lot of the negative comments about this interview are ignoring the points he made about team sizes. When he's referring to budget issues he's comparing the increase in team sizes between last gen and current gen. If the industry follwed suit and increased in a similar fashion this time around, then the production values would out-weigh average sales. You'd have massive teams to get the same kind of graphical leap.
Honestly, there isn't too much more that needs to be done graphically. A lot of current gen games look pretty freaking amazing already. I wasn't expecting a huge leap in graphics because there's not that huge a leap available. You can crisp the images up and increase framerate and animations, but besides shooting for photorealism, how much better can games really look? Hopefully, with the increased power of the new systems (which isn't that impressive compared to past generation turnover) we'll start seeing better games. Bigger worlds, longer stories, lower production costs and all around improved AI and UI. Sure we'll see slightly better graphics, but I was never expecting to be "wowed" by next gen graphics.
I'm pretty surprised. A game based on the movies that most futuristic sci-fi shooters are inspired by should've been a no-brainer 7 at least. I know other sites that gave similar reviews though, so it seems Gearbox dropped the ball on this one. It's a shame. A solid fps developer and a movie license ripe for a fps and they still can't pull it off. I might rent it from Gamefly still. There've been a few other games that critics hated that I liked. Definitely glad I didn't pre-order though.
Responsibility goes beyond parents though. Society, citizens and the government all have a varying level of resposibility to prevent tragedies like these shootings. Educating ourselves about mental illness and making sure that educational material is readily available would make a huge impact on preventing future shootings. If people knew what signs to watch for and where to go for help in regards to dangerous mental disorders, perhaps dangerous disorders can be caught and treated before situations like Sandy occur. Blaming inanimate objects for these tragedies is not only pointless, it does a disservice to all the victims of all these tragedies by ignoring the real problems and avoiding taking real responsibility. That solves and prevents nothing. Making more laws to regulate what law abiding citizens are allowed to only takes away our rights. CRIMINALS DO NOT OBEY LAWS!
It IS a parents responisibilty to pay attention to what their children are doing and what they are being influenced with. This includes violent video games. Sure studies don't indicate games increase violence, but that doesn't mean an 8 year old should be playing Call of Duty and Grand theft Auto. Yet I know of several parents that let their kids do just that. Granted those parents didn't play video games and were ignorant of what those games contained. Still, it is the parents responsibility first and foremost, to be aware of what thier children are into and what they allow to influence their children. I have two kids. I am not so ignorant to think that games don't influence my kids. Everything influences children. I pay attention to what my kids are doing and talk to them about the things that might be a negative influence. I also don't allow them to play games, watch movies, or even read books that I think will have a really bad influence.
I've been waiting to get the GOTY on PS3 and finally replay this awesome game again. I have it for 360, but I'm not buying the dlc for that. I try not to give Microsoft my business anymore. They've robbed me of enough money. It sucks Bethesda's had such a tough time getting the dlc to work on the PS3. I guess the lousy amount of RAM and the weird architecture were just too much. Still I'll probably pick up a used copy of Skyrim and buy the dlc at half price now. I'm looking forward to returning to Morrowind and Skyrim again! Even if it is over a year later.
Hmm...these are somewhat dissappointing specs. I would have thought both companies would have made systems with significantly more power than the current ones. These are far better specs by far than what we currently have, but not the technological leaps and bounds we've seen between console generations in the past. Of course structuring both systems closer to pcs will make these systems far easier and cheaper to develope for. Adding such a nice chunk of RAM is also a big plus. We shall see in the end how good the next gen will be. I'm not expecting to be wow-ed in the leaps in game quality though. I have a feeling it's going to be performance and game size that really show the differences. Not graphics and lighting effects. It really seems like both companies are playing it a little too safe this time around. It could be a very bland console generation.
@PSYCHOV3N0M @Dom_Hawk_basic The thing is, SOny offers all the things Microsoft charges for for free. Yeah the free games on Plus are only free while you're a member, but that's just business. The idea is to keep you as a member. If you cancel your membership, why should Sony keep giving you free stuff? It really isn't that great of a deal unless you buy a lot of download content though. The money you save along with the free games make it a good deal if that's what you like, but if it's not you still get all the features of XBL without paying the price of a brand new game every year.
@Daian I like all rpgs, my girlfriend however, hates watching me play western rpgs. Which I can understand. Who wants to watch a guy wandering around mountains for 100 hours if they're not controlling him? She does like watching me play jrpgs though. They just have more interesting characters and story. Usually.
