your best bet is to try one of the sim junkie sites (i mean that is a good way - love the NovaLogic Comanche series myself)

Half-Life 1
Comes to mind right away - Thought I would never get to the end.
But sadly I have seen a glimpse of what that would look like - IMHO
D...R...M
Go for Rome Total War
I am playing it now while I wait for Medieval II: Total War Kingdoms (hopefully it will fix some of the issue with Medieval II)
And good luck...
Before I make any game purchase I always check out the review on GameSpot. It is the reason why I signed up and gladly support the site.
In light of the BioShock DRM scandal and it seems like a trend is starting here. I would like to see going forward GameSpot include as part of the game review - Information about the game's copy protection and any hidden gotchas (may be another entry in the Vital Stats section) so as a potential buyer I can make an informed discussion.
GameSpot reviewers. Fellow gamers. Thoughts?

@Ken1a
UT 2004 has a single player mode however to be honest I never play it.
If I am looking for a little single player action, I just start a LAN game, launch one of the multiplayer maps, drop some bots in (Inhuman skill level but you can select what level suits you) and let the carnage fly (great for stress).
The LAN games are a great way to learn the maps. Its so much fun, something I forget to connect to online servers so I can play against other human players.
Check out the video review on gamespot for a sense of what to expect.
Then give the UT 2004 demo a try. (Will take sometime to download since you are on dial-up but the new gamespot download manger should help)
