Wow. I hope this won't be the norm for their games going forward. Then again, hard drive space is becoming bigger but it still costs quite a bit of money to get one.
I think Gears is ramping in difficulty at the right time. In fact, I wouldn't have minded Gears 3 being harder.
My point is, if developers want to capture a larger audience with their first installment, I think that's fine. But I think developers should increase the difficulty as sequels are created and players are used to the controls and the gameplay. Batman: AA and AC did that although it was not super apparent in the normal difficulty but it was increased.
I read what Scott Rhode said (at least what was said placed in this context) and I can see where he is coming from. But then I look at the image with the guy getting his brains blasted out. Is this what Scott Rhodes means by using violence to create tension? C'mon now. You can use violence to create tension but when the violence is triggered, do you have to depict it with such gore? I think that is the main question. Not the usage of violence but the depiction of it.
At the end of the day, as graphics do become more realistic, the abilities to depict life-like violence are increased. Because of that, people will use those abilities. Others won't. I think at the end of the day, no matter what kind of depiction of violence developers choose, it has to be tasteful and reasonable. But who is to decide what is tasteful and reasonable...? I guess we are. So, if you don't like the ultra-violence, don't buy it. Or perhaps developers can implement ways to turn off the life-like depictions.
Yeah. More often that not, those insane combos are not even executed at the top level. It's good to learn the basic combos that are very effective and that comes from copying sometimes.
If it can work, I'd say go for it. I know I'd be more willing to try out StarCraft II if it was on a console. I'm not a fan of the mouse and keyboard controls. I see why they're so effective but it's not a comfortable setup for me.
