No its only 150. The mother board is 50. So find me a mother board that supports the new memory that is cheap enough for me to buy a decent amount of RAM as well, maybe I can extend a LITTLE bit over 250, but I cant spend too much.

Did you completely dismiss the fact that he already has DDR2?

BackHatch

Of course not, did you not read the post I just made? I talked about the price difference of replacing it knowing he would be getting rid of his existing RAM. And it sounds like his old PC is pretty old so chances are his DDR2 Ram is pretty slow. And how much does he even have? If he only has like 1 GB (2x 512) then its not even worth bringing over. And your suggestions are just weird, you talked about the price for 3 GB of RAM?? Why would any one buy 3 GB?!? You would get 2, 4, 6, or 8!

Alright dude, find me a motherboard that supports this new RAM that is 50-80 bucks and Ill look into it. I appreciate that you are thinking about my future, but again I have a max 250 dollar buget, and I beleive the proccessor Im getting is 170 something.

The 940 is a black edition and is only $7 more, so I would get it. As for the mobo, hey're both just like any other old mobo, so I would just get the cheaper one.

[QUOTE="BackHatch"]There may not be a big difference right now but DDR3 is far from its full potential. DDR3 1800 will be out soon and there will be ever faster speeds beyond that. No need to pigonhole yourself with old technology just to save $40 or so.kaitanuvax

3GB of DDR3 1800 costs over $100 atm. Why in the world a person in need of more important upgrades than RAM spend over $200 on a DDR3 1800 compatible mobo and new DDR3 ram, when what he needs most is CPU and possibly GPU for later on. Your suggestion is not not money well spent.

Ok thanks, this is most likely what I'll do. RAM doesnt even effect gaming a whole lot, and that is my main focus. Plus, I'm pretty sure Im not the only one who is waiting for DDR3 prices to go down, so DDR3 will not be the standard any time soon.

Hmmmmm this is also a good deal. kaitanuvaxwhat ya think?

I was just going by your budget, since I was under the impression you didn't have alot of money to spare.. If you can afford more, then knock yourself out.

Well I can only spend 250 max, and both are under that. I was just asking you which combo was the best bang for the buck. Mix and match the two, your combo, his? It sounds like you know what your talking about so I was asking you.

Who says he has to get a DDR3/AM3 board?

GIGABYTE GA-MA74GM-S2 AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 740G Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

Pair it up with this:

AMD Phenom II X4 925 Deneb 2.8GHz Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor Model HDX925WFGIBOX - Retail

Just a little under $200.

neatfeatguy

I guess that would be fine but that means you are stuck with DDR2 for a long time. I would rather buy a board now that is DDR3 because DDR2 is on its way out. A year from now if he wants to upgrade he is going to hate being stuck with DDR2.

Nothing wrong with DDR2....yes it will eventually phase out, but it'll be a while. People still use computers with DDR, so DDR2 isn't going any where anytime soon.

Here's another option for the OP:

Phenom II x4 940- $145.99 (free shipping)

Gigabyte MB - $79.99 (free shipping)

Total cost: $225.98

It's a good CPU, you can overclock it fairly easily for more power if that's what you need. I've got this CPU and I've got it overclocked from stock 3.0 to 3.45. I don't plan on upgrading my CPU/MB/RAM/PSU anytime soon. I eventually want to move away from my 2 8800GTS 512 in SLI to something more powerful, but I'm patiently waiting to see where the GPU wars lead us here once Nvidia gets back on the wagon.

Hmmmmm this is also a good deal. kaitanuvaxwhat ya think?

We alredy determined that DDR2 RAM will not work on a AM3/DDR3 board.

Alright, so I happy you guys are still trying to help me out. I appreciate it. If one of you guys could try to find me the following for 150-250 (yup I raised by budget):

-Motherboard supporting AM3

-Quad core proccessor that is really good for gaming

-Maybe some compatible RAM

This will be a prettty good overhaul for my current rig that I HOPE will last me another three years at least. I have a GeForce 9800 GT video card at the moment, which I'm pretty sure is a good card, but its really limited with my current proccessor. I dont have a lot of RAM either so that will also be a good addition. If anybody can list me these parts I will be grateful.

Wow, killing floor and Red Orchestra Ostfront 41-45 were completely unknown to me, and look to be pretty good. Thanks for those who posted so far, but please keep the suggestions coming, I want as many options as I can get.

Hey guys, Im looking for a multiplayer shooter that is more strategy than individual skill. By this I mean a game where tactics like supressive fire, flanks, and charges are way more importnant than your aim or reflexes. A game where one person could almost never succeed by himself. This game could be PC or Xbox 360. Thanks for your time.

-BTW, Im not asking for this cause I suck at shooters that rely on skill, I have a 1.2 KD in Gears of War 2, which I know isnt great but it at least tells you I'm not garbage. I just want a change of pase and want to rely on teamwork to get the job done.
